Beach Ball Classic, Day 2: Socastee, MB, CA stumble

Socastee turned in a solid team effort but suffered an 85-77 setback to University (WV) in Thursday’s second round of the Beach Ball Classic at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Socastee’s Jay Williams narrowly missed a triple-double with 17 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Jevon Griffin scored a team-high 20, Jonathan Wright added 14 points, and Tanner Wohlford tallied 11 in the losing effort.

University got a matching game-high 23 points apiece from KJ McClurg and Kaden Metheny.

* Bishop O’Connell 84, Myrtle Beach 59: The Seahawks found themselves in a 40-20 halftime deficit and couldn’t recover in a lopsided loss to the Knights.

Myrtle Beach’s Da’Ron Finkley scored a game-high 19 points and Emorie Knox had 16 for the Seahawks.

The Knights had a pair of players post 15 points apiece, Marcus Dockery and Charlie Weber, while Brayon Freeman kicked in 13 points.

* Florence (MS) 72, Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 49: The Saints couldn’t keep pace with the red-hot Eagles, who shot better than 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point arc.

Florence’s Lorenzo Fort led the way with a game-high 22 points, and teammates Jaylen Forbes (15 points) and Jaylon Johnson (11 points) each recorded double-doubles with 10 rebounds apiece.

Christian Academy’s Michael Green scored a team-high 20 points but connected on only 3 of 16 from 3-point range. Davis Guyton added 15 points.

* Jack Yates (TX) 97, Christ The King (NY) 91: The Lions won a shootout over the Royals thanks to a 52-point second half performance.

Joquarius Valrie led five Lions in double-digit scoring with 22 points. Teammate Darryl Brown posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Quaran McPherson scored a game-high 28 for the Royals and added 10 boards for the double-double. Nathaniel Curry had a huge double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds.

* Westchester (CA) 54, North Meclenburg (NC) 44: In the lowest scoring game of the day, the Comets pulled away in the second half to beat the Vikings.

Jordan Brinson led the Comets with 14 points and eight rebounds – both team-highs – while Chris Ford scored a game-high 15 points for the Vikings.
