Beach Ball Classic finalizes schedule for 2012 tourney

The brackets for the Dec. 26-31 Beach Ball Classic were released Tuesday, setting the stage for what promises to be another exciting installment of the 32nd annual holiday basketball tournament’s tradition.

Beach Ball veteran Rufus King (WI) will open this year’s tournament at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center against East Rutherford (NC) on Dec. 26 at 3:30 p.m., followed by local squad St. James hosting Bishop O’Connell (VA) at 5:15 p.m. Wheeler (GA) faces Spring Valley (SC) at 7, with Socastee taking on Hudson Catholic (NJ) in the 8:45 nightcap.

On Dec. 27, Christ Presbyterian (TN) takes on St. Rita (IL) in the 3:30 opener, followed by Orem (UT) vs. Scott County (KY) at 5:15, Franklin (OH) facing Bishop Gorman (NV) at 7 and Myrtle Beach vs. Whitney Young (IL) at 8:45. The four winner’s bracket games will be played on Dec. 28, the semifinals will be held on Dec. 29 and the championship game will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.

The field also has been announced for the Dec. 18-22 Holiday Invitational girls basketball tournament, also featuring some of the top teams in the nation. Myrtle Beach, Socastee, C.E. Murray, Crestwood, Dreher and Heathwood Hall are among the Palmetto State teams in the tourney.

Out-of-state participants include Archbishop Carroll (PA), Atlantic (FL), Center Point (AL), Christ Presbyterian Academy (TN), Edgewater (FL), Kings Fork (VA), Miami (FL), Our Lady of Mercy (NJ), Penfield (NY), Perry County Central (KY) and Potterhouse (FL).

The highlight of the two-week hoopsfest, at least according to level of play, sees women’s basketball triple header on Dec. 19 – North Forida vs. Coastal Carolina, East Carolina vs. North Carolina and Clemson vs. Providence.
