Beach Ball Classic signs national broadcast deal

Bish

The Beach Ball Classic has come to terms with the American Sports Network to broadcast select games of the 2014 tournament live on its 170 plus stations across the United States.

ASN will televise four games on Friday, December 26. The first game features Northland (Ohio) vs. Hough (NC) at 3:30 pm (ET). That contest is followed by East Carteret (NC) vs. Spring Valley (SC) at 5:15 pm, Franklin (OH) vs. Mullins (SC) at 7pm, and St. Edward (OH) vs. Myrtle Beach (SC) at 8:45 p.m.

On Saturday, December 27, ASN will televise the 5:15 p.m. (ET) game between North Little Rock (AR) and Knott County Central (KY), followed by Shadow Mountain (AZ) vs. Scott County (KY) at 7 p.m. The final game of the night will feature Bishop Gorman (NV) against Socastee (SC) at 8:30 p.m.

The 3 year deal will run through the 2016 tournament.

Additionally, WWMB TV 21 will carry all of the winners bracket games live locally, plus the 3rd place game and consolation bracket championship game. They will also carry select games from the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational and the Carolinas Challenge.

Fans will be able to watch the games live online as well at beachballclassic.com with streaming services provided by HTC Communications.

Run by Sinclair Networks, a division of television station owner Sinclair Broadcast Group, The American Sports Network officially launched in August 2014. ASN is affiliated primarily with CW and MyNetworkTV stations owned or operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group (or, in some markets, on a digital subchannel of a Sinclair station), but is syndicated to other, non-Sinclair television stations, along with regional sports networks. ASN reaches approximately 39% of all American households.

Labeled as America’s Finest High School Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Beach Ball Classic began in 1981 as a dream of then Socastee High School Coach Dan D’Antoni (now head coach at Marshall University). It’s held each year from December 26th through New Year’s eve at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The Beach Ball Classic broadcast network began in the mid 80’s with several local and regional radio stations. The network grew to eventually become one of the very first sports events to stream live video of each game on the internet, before expanding to include live television broadcasts of the games on HTC Cable channel 4.

Committee member, and director of broadcasting Allen Smothers has been with the tournament since the early days, “We’ve had several opportunities through the years to expand the network, but this will allow us to reach into homes across the nation to highlight the growing sports scene across the Grand Strand. The Beach Ball Classic is the original and still the very best holiday tournament in America and this allows us to show the nation what the locals have know for years. In addition, it provides a unique opportunity to showcase Myrtle Beach to millions of potential visitors.”

Conway’s Lucky Dog Television Productions will handle all local production work in combination with Smother’s Coastline Sports Media. The two organizations enter their 12th year producing the broadcasts in partnership.

The 2014, 16 team field looks to be one on the strongest in recent memories, with local teams Myrtle Beach and Socatee facing off against frequent guests and returning champions St. Edward (Ohio) and Bishop Gorman (Nevada).

Additionally, several nationally ranked players will participate including Jalek Felton with Mullins, Spring Valley and South Carolina commit P.J. Dozier, and Duke commit Luke Kennard.

Franklin HS – (OH)
