Chants, Bennett turn team’s focus from cats to ‘Dawgs

After becoming an overnight Internet sensation for his rant about cats and dogs, Coastal Carolina football coach David Bennett couldn’t help but reference his viral video when comparing and contrasting last week’s Division II foe Catawba and Saturday’s showdown with SEC power Georgia.

They are, after all, the Bulldogs.

“We are `the Catawba’ this week, we are the small guys,” Bennett said at Wednesday’s press conference. “Hey, they’re the Dawgs. I wish we had some wildcats this week. We are going to have to fight the dogs off.”

Bennett, who admits to being a bit of a caveman when it comes to computers, was a virtual-reality sensation this time last week. Now real reality sets in when the Chanticleers travel to Athens, Ga., to face an angry 0-2 Bulldogs squad.

“In this world we live in with Facebook and tweeting and cameras, I don’t know how this thing got up out of here last week,” Bennett joked.

But the laughs are over now as the Chants take their 2-0 record between the hedges of Sanford Stadium. Coastal has had other guarantee games against big-time teams before – Penn State, West Virginia, Clemson – but never one against a team so desperate for a win.

Bennett borrowed an image from the movie “Hoosiers” to highlight the point to his players that the game is the same no matter the surroundings.

“It’s a great challenge, but we go to play the game,” he said. “(The field) is 53 yards and some change wide by 100 long. It doesn’t matter if its in front on 90,000 or 9,000, we want to go get better.”

But so do the Dawgs, who are hungry after falling to Boise State and South Carolina in consecutive weeks. They will be hungry for another chicken dinner after getting coldcocked by the Gamecocks last Saturday.

“People are probably telling them that they need to wear us out,” Bennett said. “They’ve got some of the biggest guys I’ve ever seen and fast people all around them. They’re as talented a team as we’ve played since we’ve been at Coastal Carolina University.”

Not exactly the kind of comments that spread like wildfires on the Internet, but that’s the way he prefers it. He’d much rather grab his 15 minutes of fame for upsetting the Dawgs than complaining about cats.

The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and can be heard locally on 93.9 FM ESPN The Team.
