Birds bat around the order in seventh to down Dash

pel-chenBehind starter Jen-Ho Tseng, who struck out a career-best nine batters on Tuesday night, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, rallied to beat the Winston-Salem Dash 4-2 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

After being shut out for the first six innings against Dash starter James Dykstra, the Birds put up four runs in the seventh and held on for the win to even the series.

The Dash (66-61, 36-21 second half) took an early 2-0 lead in support of Dykstra, who allowed just two base hits and a walk in his six innings of work. In the second inning, Dash left fielder Nick Basto doubled to left, and two batters later, right fielder Nolan Earley gave Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead with another single to left.

Earley was at the center of the visiting offense again in the fifth. He singled to right field and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Michael Danner then laced a two out, RBI single to left field to give the Dash a 2-0 edge. Tseng would strike out the side in that frame before fanning his career-high ninth batter in the sixth.

With a slim 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Winston-Salem turned to the bullpen, and the Birds batted around to grab the lead. Left-hander Jefferson Olacio replaced Dykstra and was greeted by Mark Zagunis with a double to the right-center field wall. The next batter, Jason Vosler, scorched a line drive to center field which skipped away from Adam Engel and allowed Zagunis to score. After a fly out, the Pelicans loaded the bases on a walk and an infield single. Carlos Penalver then tied the game at 2-2 by drawing a bases-loaded walk, and Daniel Lockhart gave Myrtle Beach the lead with an RBI fielder’s choice. With two in scoring position, Euclides Leyer replaced Olacio and hit Chesny Young and Pin-Chieh Chen, giving the Birds a 4-2 lead that they would not surrender.
