Birds win, return for flags, fireworks, fidget spinners

Both Connor Myers and Adonis Paula drove in two runs Wednesday to help the Myrtle Beach Pelicans salvage their series by beating the Frederick Keys 6-1 at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

The score was tied at one when Robert Garcia tripled to begin the fifth inning against Keys (50-57, 19-19) reliever Jon Keller (0-1). Two batters later, with the infield in, Paula hit a grounder to first baseman Steve Laurino, who’s throw was late to home, allowing Garcia to score to put Myrtle Beach (57-52, 14-25) in front at 2-1.

In the sixth inning, Trent Giambrone reached on an error to start the frame. Vimael Machin traded places with Giambrone on a fielder’s choice, and then Jesse Hodges singled. After a groundout, Frederick intentionally walked Garcia to face Myers, who promptly banged a two-run single to center field. Paula followed with an RBI single of his own to widen the margin to 5-1.

That was more than starter Mike Rucker (4-2) needed. The right-hander scattered 11 hits to only allow one run in 6.1 innings, whiffing four against one walk. Pedro Araujo went the final 2.2 without ceding a hit for his eighth save.

The tally was still 5-1 when Tyler Alamo jump-started the eighth with a single. Garcia walked and two batters after that, Paula was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Roberto Caro drew another free pass with the bases juiced to plate Alamo and extend the advantage to 6-1.

Thursday’s game between the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Salem Red Sox has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game getting underway at 5:30 p.m. Other series events include Friday (Fidget Spinner giveaway, Pizza Night, Foodie Friday); Saturday (“W” Flag Giveaway, fireworks, locals discount night); and Sunday: (Fireworks, Pre-game on-field catch).
