Boys Golf: Seahawks earn repeat as state runner-up

The Myrtle Beach High School varsity boys golf team finished second overall at the Region 4A State Championship. Lancaster won the championship and AC Flora finished third. The two-day tournament took place at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University and wrapped up Tuesday.

Though the Seahawks bested many of the top teams in the state, coach Lowell Counce described the squad’s second place finish as upsetting.

“I’m disappointed, but still happy,” he said. “Two years in a row we’ve done this and I’m proud of the guys. They’ve worked hard but we just fell short at the end.”

Only Lancaster — with a score of 600 — topped the Myrtle Beach boys golf team, which ended up with 610, during the Region 4A state championship. The two-day tourney wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University.

North Myrtle Beach finished with a total of 638 and St. James shot 643 as a team.

Though MBHS was down just one stroke to the eventual champion after Monday, the team was outlasted by the Bruins and shot a 305 total on the tournament’s final day.

“[The boys] hung in there as long as they could and down the stretch,” Counce said. “Lancaster just toughed it out more than we did. They’re a good team.”

“It’s tough,” said junior golfer Holden Grigg, who was coming off of a first place finish individually in last year’s 4A state championship.

“It sucks coming up short as a team,” he said. “I know everybody worked their hardest. ”

Grigg led his team with 147 strokes followed by Dock Jarman who shot 149. Rounding out the team were Keegan Vaugh at 158, Dalton Todd with 160 and Chris Pacyna who scored 168.

“This is one of those courses that if you were hitting the ball good, you could score on it,” Grigg said. “But if you were missing greens with the way the greens were it was impossible to get up and down. … I just had too many big numbers to win individually.”

The Seahawks were fresh off a Region 4A Lower State Championship and also were runners-up in the 2017 State Finals.

“After knocking on the door last year, we wanted to kick it in but we finished second again and we’ll take that,” Counce said. “We don’t hang our heads.”

Despite the finish, Grigg remains optimistic.

“We’ve got next year to try to win a team title,” he said. “Hopefully we win it next year.”
