cfhoops-5The Region 6-5A boys basketball playoff picture came into clearer view Friday night with a pair of local teams clinching postseason berths on the road.

Socastee defeated Carolina Forest 57-52 at The Black Hole, earning the Braves (13-10 overall, 4-5 region) the fourth and final playoff spot and ending the postseason hopes for the Panthers (9-13, 3-6). Socastee closes out the regular season at Sumter on Tuesday.

The Braves took control of the back-and-forth contest in the final period, using a 12-2 run to build their largest lead of the game at 48-40 midway through the fourth quarter. Carolina Forest climbed back to cut the deficit to two in the waning seconds but Socastee sealed the win at the free throw line.

Socastee got a game-high 17 points from Andrew Gardner and Jason Cudd. Carolina Forest was led by Richmond Collier’s 14 points, Tariq Timmons’ 12, Matt Beale’s 10.

Meanwhile, Conway held off South Florence 44-40 to secure a postseason bid. Led by Darren Stanley’s season-high 20 point effort, the Tigers (15-5, 5-5) claimed the No. 3 seed. They will close out the regular season against visiting Carolina Forest on Tuesday.

* Marlboro County 47, St. James 30: The Sharks struggled offensively but still managed to carry a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. However, the Bulldogs outscored St. James 26-8 in the final frame to force a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot.

* Wilson 81, North Myrtle Beach 55: The Tigers clinched the region title over the second-place Chiefs, who visit Myrtle Beach next week looking to luck up the No. 2 seed and a first-round home playoff game.

* Christian Academy 83, Marlboro Academy 27: The Saints (15-11, 9-1) celebrated Senior Night with an easy victory to tie for first place in the region.
