Boys Hoops: MB, NMB win; CF’s winning streak halted

mbhoops-1The Myrtle Beach High boys basketball team remained undefeated in Region 7-3A play by downing visiting St. James 62-53 on Tuesday night.

Following an emotional pre-game presentation to alumnus Ramon Sessions, a current Charlotte Bobcat who led the Seahawks to the 2004 Class 3A state title, the new Seahawks (11-5 overall, 3-0 region) proved they may be in for bigger things this season.

Myrtle Beach led throughout the contest and got a team-high 18 points from Solomon Cooper and 12 from Brooks Swanson. St. James’ Dakota Holmes scored a game-high 22 and Garrett Mullis tallied 10 points.

Myrtle Beach faces rival North Myrtle Beach on Friday in a showdown of region unbeatens.

* Sumter 72, Carolina Forest 66: The Panthers saw their six-game winning streak snapped by the visiting Gamecocks, putting the two teams in a tie for first place in Region 6-4A.

The Panthers (8-8 overall, 2-1 region) trailed 35-30 at halftime but cut the deficit to one points entering the fourth period. But the Panthers had no answer for Sumter’s Erick Shaw, who poured in 28 points to lead the Gamecocks (10-4, 2-1).

Carolina Forest got a team-high 24 points from Juwan Butler-Stevens and Zavier Jones added 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the winning streak alive. The Panthers face rival Conway on Friday.

* North Myrtle Beach 70, Georgetown 39: The Chiefs remained undefeated in Region 7-3A play with a dominating performance against the visiting Bulldogs.

The Chiefs (14-3, 3-0) used a balanced scoring effort to down Georgetown. Twins Josh and Matt Lindsey scored 16 points and 11 points, respectively, with Matt adding eight assists. Teammate Matthew Stanaland posted 14 points.

The Chiefs prepare for a first-place region showdown with rival Myrtle Beach on Friday.

* Socastee 55, Wilson 50: The Braves (10-7, 2-1) knocked off the visiting Tigers, who fell to 0-3 in the region despite being a favorite to win the league. Check back for more details.
