Boys Hoops: MB tops SJ, creates logjam atop 7-3A

mbhoops-2sjThe Myrtle Beach High boys waited till the coldest stretch of the year to play their hottest basketball, winning their fifth consecutive region contest Friday night with an impressive 59-45 victory over St. James at the Shark Tank.

Following a difficult 3-13 start to the season and an 0-3 beginning to Region 7-3A play, the Seahawks (8-12, 5-3) suddenly find themselves in a four-way tie for first place with St. James (11-10, 5-3), North Myrtle Beach and Wilson.

The Seahawks used a strong team defense and a balanced scoring effort to avenge an earlier loss to the Sharks. Bryce Schneider scored 17, Adam Zam tallied 16, JaQuan Chestnut had 11 and Keonte Sessions chipped in nine.

Led by Jackson Hurston’s 15 points and Zach Werba’s 13, St. James led 28-27 at halftime, but the second half was all Myrtle Beach. The Seahawks opened their lead to 43-35 at the end of the third period and cruised the rest of the way for the rare road win.

* Carolina Forest 45, Sumter 44: The Panthers knocked off the Region 6-4A leading Gamecocks on a buzzer beater by Xavier Lynch.

Trailing by one with 4 seconds remaining, Carolina Forest’s Duane Moss drove baseline, got tripled teamed and found an open Lynch for the game-winning basket. The game was back and forth all night as neither team lead by more than six.

Damon McDowell led the Panthers with 12 points and Duane Moss added eight. Lynch, Tariq Timmons and Matt Weatherwax tallied six apiece. The Panthers welcome Socastee on Tuesday.

* Conway 58, West Florence 57: The Tigers (13-7, 2-6) kept their distant playoff hopes alive with a one-point win over the Knights. Conway welcomes South Florence on Tuesday.

* North Myrtle Beach 57, Georgetown 39: The Chiefs (9-12, 5-3) defeated the Bulldogs on the road to pull into a four-way tie for first place in Region 7-3A. They play host to Lake City on Tuesday.
