Boys Hoops: Sharks rally past Saints; Panthers roll

sjhoops-stjames vs camb 2Local public schools have grown leary of scheduling SCISA powerhouse Christian Academy in boys basketball, and the Saints showed why again Tuesday night by putting a scare in SCHSL Class 3A St. James for the second time this season.

After last week’s meeting came down to the final second and a one-point win for the Sharks (4-1), St. James had to rally in the rematch on the road Tuesday. Despite trailing by double digits at halftime, the Sharks came back for a 47-45 win.

St. James came out ice cold at Christian Academy’s gym, falling behind 26-14 at the intermission for the Sharks lowest point output in a half this season. But they held the Saints (3-8) to only five points in the third to close the gap to 31-28 before completing the comeback in the fourth quarter.

St. James was led by Jackson Hurston with 14 points and Jordan Fields added nine. Christian Academy got 12 points from Michael Green, and Jalen Matthews posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Sharks travel to Waccamaw on Friday. The Saints will play in exhibition game to open the Beach Ball Classic on Dec. 26.

* Carolina Forest 64, Laney (NC) 44: The Panthers played far from a flawless game but still came away with the easy win over the visiting Buccaneers from north of the state border.

Carolina Forest was led by Duane Moss with 18 points, Damon McDowell with 12, and Matt Weatherwax with 10. The Panthers travel to Summerville on Friday.
