Baseball: Braves, Sharks, Seahawks win region tilts

The Socastee High baseball team broke out the whopping sticks against visiting North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, pounding out 15 hits en route to a 13-1 victory.

The Braves (9-5 overall, 3-2 Region 7-3A) scored three runs in each of the first three innings and four in the fourth to inact the mercy rule after the top half of the fifth.

Socastee’s Zach Hyde went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Hunter Renfrow and Buck Bacot went 3-for-3 to lead the Braves at the plate. Finn Melko went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Dylan Thompson went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Thompson (4-0) also got the job done on the mound, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters on the night. Reliever Sam McKinney came on to pitch a perfect fifth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

North Myrtle Beach pitchers Kyle Cooper and Billy Pippin were pounded by the Braves, who travel the Georgetown on Saturday for another key region contest.

* Myrtle Beach 1, Georgetown 0: Brandon Dorsey outdueled Georgetown’s Hunter Graham in a classic pitchers’ showdown on Tuesday, giving the Seahawks a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Myrtle Beach’s Wilson Wicker drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the first inning, and Shane Faulk collected the Seahawks’ only hit in the game as the Seahawks (6-5 overall, 4-1 region) led wire to wire.

Dorsey struck out 10 Bulldogs and allowed only three hits to claim the victory on the mound. Graham also went the distance and struck out six Seahawks, but the Bulldogs’ two errors proved their undoing in the opening inning.

Georgetown’s Seth Wall, Faulk and Graham each had a hit apiece but they couldn’t push the tying run across the plate. THe Bulldogs committed two errors to zero for the Seahawks.

* St. James 4, Wilson 2: The Sharks (6-1, 4-1) rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to get past the host Tigers and stay on top of the region standings.

Seven different Sharks collected hits for St. James, including an RBI double by Caleb Duggan and singles by Branden Pugliese, Anders DeShields and Brock Gallagher.

St. James’ Dillon LeDuc pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win, scattering three hits and one walk over the outing while striking out four. Duggan closed out the last two batters via strikeouts.
