Braves overcome turnovers to knock off West Brunswick

The best thing you can say about Socastee’s 44-30 victory over visiting West Brunswick (NC) is it was a win. But the Braves (2-0) didn’t score many style points in committing six uncharacteristic turnovers.

The border showdown couldn’t have started much worse for Braves, who committed two turnovers on their first two offensive series and found itself in an early 8-0 hole with the Trojans threatening to do more damage. But the Braves answered with five touchdown drives in the first half to build a commanding lead despite having ball-control issues in a ball-control offense.

After the Braves fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, West Brunswick’s Tayvon Stanley broke loose for a touchdown run on the Trojans’ first play, and they tacked on a 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead just 34 seconds into the contest.

Socastee quarterback Hunter Renfrow was intercepted on his second pass attempt of the season and the Trojans took over in Braves territory. But the defense held and the offense gelled, beginning with Kyle Smith’s 3-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to one.

After another defensive stop, the Braves took the lead on Renfrow’s 79-yard TD dash. Socastee’s next drive was its best of the night – four plays, 83 yards and capped by Delano Walters’ 8-yard TD run.

West Brunswick scored a field goal and touchdown in the second quarter, but it couldn’t slow Socastee’s triple-option offense. Walters caught a 26-yard TD pass from Renfrow on the next series, then Smith added another TD dive in the waning seconds of halftime for a 36-17 lead at the break.

The Trojans battled back in the second half thanks to more Socastee miscues. Stanley scored his second TD on a short run and the Trojans stopped Socastee on the goal line by recovering a fumble in the end zone.

West Brunswick scored on a touchdown pass early in the fourth to cut the deficit to 36-30 with 10 minutes remaining before Walters came to the rescue with his third touchdown of the night on a 45-yard burst. Renfrow added the 2-pointer to account for the final score.
