Braves put up 60 points on Tigers for rare series repeat

It took more than two decades for the Socastee High football program to put together back-to-back wins over rival Conway.

On Friday night at The Backyard, it only took the Braves (4-0) about four minutes to end the drought. And when the dust settled, the lopsided scoreboard revealed an even rarer site: Socastee 60, Conway 14.

Socastee quarterack Hunter Renfrow ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, amassing more than 200 yards via the ground and the air. Fullback Kyle Smith also scored three rushing TDs to lead the Braves’ triple-option attack, and Delano Walters rushed for more than 150 yards rushing and receiving.

Socastee took the opening drive 68 yards to paydirt in five just plays, capped by Kyle Smith’s 28-yard burst up the middle. Following a Conway fumble on just its third play was recovered by Chris Simmons deep in Tigers’ territory, Renfrow ran it in from 3 yards out and added a 2-point conversion for a 15-0 lead in just four minutes into the game.

Socastee added a 36-yard field goal by Matt Trimby to close the first period, then Renfrow threw a 15-yard TD toss to Walters for a 25-0 advantage.

With Conway’s leading rushers, Cortez Brown and Deandre Hickman, suspended from the team, the Tigers had a tough time moving the ball on the ground against the Braves defense. But quarterback Ethan Smith finally got the Tigers on the board with a TD toss to Ikeem Coles. Receiver Bryan Edwards added the 2-point conversion from the wildcat formation previously run by Brown.

But the Braves quickly responded as Smith pounded his way into the end zone for his second touchdown run of the night, then Renfrow ran one in from 11 yards out in the final minute of the second quarter to give Socastee a 39-8 halftime lead.

Renfrow opened the second half the same way he ended the first with a 13-yard TD, but Conway answered back with another Smith-to-Coles TD connection to make it 46-14 after three quarters.

Socastee kept its foot on the gas in the fourth quarter as Smith scored his third rushing TD. The Braves then blocked a punt and Joe Smolenski recovered it for a touchdown and a 60-14 thumping of the Tigers (1-3).
