CAC swimmers strike gold at LC state championships

South Carolina Swimming welcomed 751 swimmers from 26 swim clubs to its annual Long Course Championship meet this weekend at the Carolina Natatorium on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Coastal Aquatic Club (CAC) had 26 qualifiers and 19 swimmers who competed in the meet.

Swimmers age 10-and-under used the timed-finals format during the afternoon session. Older swimmers (ages 11 and up) had a preliminary qualifying session in the morning and a Finals session in the evening including the top 10 qualifiers from the morning session.

For the weekend, 11 of CAC’s 19 swimmers combined for 7 State Championships, 12 Podium Finishes (TOP 3) and 33 TOP TEN finishes. Taylor Steele (100 Breast, 200 Breast), Fred de Castro (100 Fly, 200 Fly, and 50 Free), Ian Morgan (1,500 Free), and Jordyn O’Dell (100 Back) were crowned Long Course State Champions. Ian Morgan (400 IM, 800 Free), Casey Mitchell (1,500 Free, 800 Free), and Ella Habib (200 Fly) joined them on the podium for 2nd or 3rd place finishes.

Here’s a look at all TOP TEN finishes:

* Taylor Steele: 1st in 100 Breast; 1st in 200 Breast.
* Fred de Castro: 1st in 100 Fly; 1st in 50 Free; and 1st in 200 Fly.
* Ian Morgan: 1st in 1,500 Free (“The Mile); 2nd in 400 IM; 2nd in 800 Free; 7th in 200 Fly; 8th in 200 IM; 8th in 400 Free; and 9th in 200 Free.
* Jordyn O’Dell: 1st in 100 Back; 4th in 100 Fly; and 7th in 50 Free.
* Casey Mitchell: 3rd in 1,500 Free (“The Mile”); 3rd in 800 Free; 6th in 100 Back; 7th in 400 IM; and 7th in 200 Back.
* Ella Habib: 3rd in 200 Fly; 6th in 100 Fly; 8th in 200 Back; and 8th in 50 Fly.
* Harrison Clinton: 4th in 100 Breast; 4th in 200 Breast; 6th in 200 Fly; 9th in 100 Fly;
* Chandra Robideaux: 6th in 50 Fly.
• Tyler Eldred: 7th in 100 Breast; 8th in 50 Free.
* John Grey Crosby: 9th in 50 Free.
* Kayla Aguilar: 9th in 100 Free.

The CAC Men’s 4×100 Individual Medley Relay Team (Casey Mitchell, Harrison Clinton, Fred De Castro, and Tyler Eldred) finished second, losing only to a relay team from Team Greenville, the eventual overall Team Champion. Their race time set a new CAC team record. The CAC Men’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay Team (Ian Morgan, John Grey Crosby, Ryan Eldred, and Tyler Eldred) finished 4th in a very competitive field. Their race time also set a new CAC team record.

Taylor Steele’s sweep of the 100- and 200-Breast, with times approaching prior Olympic Trial Qualifying times, was described by Coach Fabio da Silva “as the best performance by any swimmer in the meet.” Her 100 Breast time qualified her for the Phillips 66 National Championship meet, the most prestigious meet in the United States during a non-Olympic year.

Harrison Clinton’s performance is noteworthy in that he just transitioned to the 15-and-older age group. So, he was among the youngest swimmers in his age group while posting 4 TOP TEN finishes.
With the end of Long Course season, CAC currently has 4 swimmers qualified for National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Junior Nationals (Taylor Steele, Ian Morgan, Casey Mitchell, and Harrison Clinton). Further, Taylor Steele and Harrison are also qualified for the USA Swimming Futures Championships.

CAC was represented by the following swimmers at Long Course States: Kayla Aguilar, Harrison Clinton, John Grey Crosby, Frederico De Castro, Ryan Eldred, Tyler Eldred, Jack Guthinger, Joe Guthinger, Ella Habib, Alan Levy Jr., Casey Mitchell, Ian Morgan, Jordyn O’Dell, Christian Patricio, Marissa Patricio, Chandra Robideaux, Taylor Steele, Molly Tate, and Miles Washington.
