Carolina Forest swimmers finish 1-2 in season debut

cfswim-backstrokeThe Carolina Forest High boys and girls swim teams placed first and second, respectively, at the season-opening Florence Invitational on Saturday.

The Carolina Forest boys racked up 86 points to beat runner-up St. James (56) and host West Florence (48) by comfortable margins in a six-team field. The Medley Relay team of Ethan Nechemia, David Zevgolis, Rafael Adi and Connor Campbell took first place. Ethan Nechemia and Deshawn Kuhl took first and second in the 500 Freestyle with Nechemia earning a consideration time for the state meet. Rafael Adi and David Zevgolis also went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke. The meet ended with another first-place finish for the 400 Freestyle relay team consisting of Joshua Norman, Saman Vitharana, Garett Randall and Deshawn Kuhl.

The girls had 74 points to finish runner-up to behind host West Florence (96) in an eight-team field. The Medley Relay team of Elizabeth Gatley, Taylor Steele, Peyton McWhorter and Jensen Helgerson finished second while state qualifying consideration times. Taylor Steele won the 200 Individual Medley and earned an automatic state Qualification Time. Peyton McWhorter finished second in the 100 Butterfly while also receiving an automatic state time.

Elizabeth Gatley finished first and Morgan Young placed third in the 500 Freestyle. Peyton McWhorter earned her second automatic state qualifying time by winning the 100 Backstroke, and Taylor Steele also earned her second individual automatic state qualifying time in the 100 Breaststroke.

The Panthers will host the Ripley’s Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 27.
