CBHI: Miami repeats behind Momprimier’s triple-double

ggame23Miami (FL) Senior became just the second team in the history of the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational to repeat as champions as the Stingarees posted a 55-44 victory over Riverdale (TN).

Miami Senior (13-1) joins Seneca (SC), which captured the first two CBHI titles in 1999 and 2000, as the only other program to win back-to-back championships.

Miami Senior was led by Baylor signee Beatrice Momprimier, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 13 blocked shots.  Alesis Whittington paced Riverdale (12-2; Murfreesboro, TN) with 16 points.

* Anna Hayton’s old-fashioned three-point play with 1.8 seconds to play gave Parkersburg (WV) South a 50-49 victory over Archbishop John Carroll (PA) in the third place game of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.

Parkersburg South trailed all but the opening 2:08 of the contest before Hayton tied the game and then hit the winner from the charity stripe.  Jessica Carney connected on one of two free throws for Archbishop John Carroll (4-4; Radnor, PA) to give the Patriots a 49-47 lead.  Laken Valentine missed a 3-pointer from deep in the corner but Hayton grabbed the offensive board and layed the ball into the basket as she was fouled by Julia Gantz.

Katelyn Byrd led Parkersburg South with 17 points while Taryn McCutcheon added 14 points and seven assists.  Lexi Stover led Archbishop John Carroll with 12 points.

* Shelbyville (TN) Central scored a 49-42 victory over Christ Church (SC) to capture 5th place in the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational at the Myrtle Beach (SC) Convention Center.

Shelbyville Central (9-5) trailed for just over one minute in the contest but had to come from behind in the final two minutes for the vicory.  Trailing by as many as nine points in the second half, Christ Church (7-2; Greenville, SC) chipped away and eventually took the lead at 42-41 on a 3-pointer by Shayla Bennett with 1:43 to play.  Romny Felts regained the lead for Shelbyville Central with a pair of free throws with 1:11 on the clock.  Those free throws proved to be the start of a 8-0 run for the Eaglettes to seal the win.  Christ Church misfired on their last four shouts from the field and committed a pair of turnovers in the final minute of action.

To’Nesha Allison posted 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Shelbyville Central.  Christ Church was led by Sahyla Bennett’s 27 points.

* Riverside (NC) defeated South Forsyth (GA) 78-76 in overtime to win the consolation bracket championship of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.

Riverside (6-2; Durham, NC) tied the game at 67-67 with 49 seconds remaining in regulation on a layup by Sunterea Highsmith.  Riverside would survive to play the extra session when South Forsyth (11-2; Cumming, GA) missed on a jumper in the lane and the front ends of a pair of free throws in the final 28 seconds of play.

In the extra session, KK Storms game South Forsyth a 69-67 advantage just 12 seconds into overtime.  Riverside responded with eight unanswered points to open a 75-69 lead with 1:31 on the clock.  After trading baskets, Caroline Diem connected on a short jumper and then connected on a long 3-pointer from the corner to pull South Forsyth to within one point at 77-76 with 24 seconds to play.  Storms had a chance to tie the game as she had a steal on the next possession but missed a jumper with eight seconds remaining.  Takwana Bland notched the final point for Riverside by connecting on one-of-two free throws with one second remaining and South Forsyth was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
