CBHI: South Shore storms Socastee in second round

cbhilogoThe second day of the 2016 Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational saw a pair of consolation bracket games to open the day followed by the completion of the opening round.  Advancing to the quarterfinals out of the second wave of opening round games were Winder-Barrow (GA), Wesleyan (GA), Ferguson Senior (FL), and South Shore (NY).

In the final game of the second day and of the opening round, South Shore (4-1; Brooklyn, NY) scored early and often in 61-15 win over Socastee (5-4; Myrtle Beach, SC).  South Shore was led with 11 points each by Selena Philoxy and Valena Hickerson.  Selena Philoxy also added a game-high 14 rebounds.  Socastee was paced by Shayla Baldwin’s nine points.

* ORANGEBURG-WILKINSON (SC) 59, PRAIRIE VIEW (CO) 20: The Lady Bruins opened a double-digit advantage at 14-4 with 8:07 to play in the first half.  After seeing Prairie View (4-4; Henderson, CO) cut the advantage to 18-12. Orangeburg-Wilkinson (6-3; Orangeburg, SC) scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 28-12 lead at the break.  The Lady Bruins went on to lead by as many as 39 points in the second half in cruising to the consolation bracket victory.

Asia Hampton led Orangeburg-Wilkinson in scoring with 12 points.  Brandi Rivers (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Jomauria Irick (10 points, 10 rebounds) posted double-doubles for the Lady Bruins.

April Barra paced Prairie View with six points after coming off of the bench.

* HILLSIDE (NC) 73, HARRIS COUNTY (GA) 37: Hillside (9-1; Durham, NC) rebounded from its first loss of the season in the opening round with an impressive 73-37 win over Harris County (9-2; Hamilton, GA) in a consolation bracket game.  Hillside led by as many as 37 points after building a 40-14 halftime advantage.

University of South Carolina signee Elisia Grissett led Hillside with 21 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, six steals and three blocks.  Harris County was led by Jessika Carter’s 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.

* WINDER-BARROW (GA) 63, DREHER (SC) 37: Winder-Barrow (6-3, Winder, GA) trailed for just 18 seconds and led by as many as 26 as the Bulldogs cruised to an opening round victory over Dreher (6-1, Columbia, SC).

Sophomore guard Chellia Watson connected on 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc, to lead Winder-Barrow with 22 points.  Junior Olivia Nelson-Ododa posted 19 points and eight rebounds, while Latrice Perkins chipped in 15 points, seven assists and six steals for the Bulldogs.

Dreher was paced by Jaelynn Murray’s 20 points and 12 rebounds.

* WESLEYAN (GA) 58, FRANKLIN COUNTY (KY) 35: Wesleyan (8-0; Norcross, GA) scored a 58-35 victory in an opening round game over Franklin County (7-1; Frankfort, KY).  Wesleyan never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 23 points down the stretch.

Mikayla Coombs led Wesleyan with 22 points, while Amaya Register chipped in 11 points for the Cougars.  Franklin County was paced by Kindall Talley’s nine points.

* FERGUSON SENIOR (FL) 65, CARMEL CHRISTIAN (NC) 42: After four lead changes and two tied scores, Ferguson Senior (10-2; Miami, FL) closed the first half with a 16-4 run to open a 30-19 advantage at the half.  The second half saw the Falcons stretch the lead to as many as 23 points in cruising to a 65-42 opening round victory over Carmel Christian Academy (6-4; Matthews, NC).

Ferguson Senior was paced by Natalia Pineda’s 18 points, five assists and five steals.  Cheyanne Daniels added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons.

Carrington Barnett posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cougars.
