CCU Female Athletes of the Month: Relay teams top list

For the first time in program history the Coastal Carolina women’s track & field team will send two relay teams to the NCAA Championships.

Both the 4×100 and 4×400 finished among the top-five teams at the NCAA East Preliminary Round and will head into the Final Round as top-15 seeds. The Championships are being held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

The 4×100 team, consisting of senior Erica Peake, sophomore Symphony Thompson, freshman Teka Simpson and sophomore Qwontajah Thompson, is seeded 10th after its qualifying time of 44.48 in the quarterfinal round. The foursome was named the CCU Female Athletes of the Month.

The top-seeded team is Kansas who clocked a time of 43.56 in the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The other eight teams ahead of the Chants are Texas A&M (43.68), LSU (43.81), UCF (43.85), Texas (43.96), Clemson (44.30), Oregon (44.31), USC (44.38) and Houston (44.40).

The 4×400 team is ranked 15th headed into the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:34.09. Freshman Jessica Gelibert, Q. Thompson, Simpson and Peake finished fifth in the NCAA East Preliminary Round and will look to move up the standings in Eugene, Ore. this weekend. The top-seed is Arkansas who clocked a time of 3:28.92 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The top-10 teams include Arkansas, Texas (3:29.94), Illinois (3:30.76), Texas A&M (3:31.61), Kansas (3:31.77), USC (3:32.31), Oregon (3:32.36), Notre Dame (3:32.43), Stanford (3:32.65) and Florida (3:32.68).

The 4×100 relay is the first event of the NCAA Championship scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday. The Chants will compete in the third and final heat against UAB, Florida A&M, Nevada, LSU, UCF, Rutgers and UNLV. The top two from each heat and then the next two fastest times advance to the finals on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. (EST) The Chants come in with the third fastest qualifying time in the heat.

The 4×400 competition will begin on Thursday at 9:20 p.m. (EST) The Chants will compete in the second of three heats against St. John’s, Rutgers, Texas, Memphis, Kansas, Stanford and Arizona. The top two from each heat and then the next two fastest times advance to the finals on Saturday at 6:43 p.m. (EST) The Chants come in with the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the heat.
