CCU Hoops: UTA sweeps; Adams nets 1,000th point

Jaylen Shaw led five Coastal Carolina players in double digits with 18 points, but it was not enough in a hard-fought 87-80 loss at Texas Arlington.

The loss stopped CCU’s four-game winning streak.

Zac Cuthbertson picked up his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. He also had three steals.

Demario Beck did his usual thing, scoring 13 points on five-of-seven shooting. He also had seven rebounds.

Freshman Tre Brown was coming off a nine-point effort in the win over Texas State, and did not slow down against UTA, scoring a career-high 12 points. Artur Labinowicz was the fifth double-digit scorer finishing with 10 points.

Shaw continued to show his all-around game, finishing with five points, five assists and a steal.

CCU (11-14, 5-7 Sun Belt) shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field and hit nine of their 29 three point attempts (31%). CCU also did a solid job at the free throw line hitting 17 of 19 (89.5%).

The free throw line was one of the differences in the game as UTA (15-10, 6-6 Sun Belt) was able to shoot 19 more free throws, Hitting 22 of its 33 attempts.

Women

The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team suffered another heartbreaking road loss Saturday afternoon as the Chants fell, 65-63, at UTA’s College Park Center. The loss spoiled a milestone performance for Coastal’s lone senior Jas Adams, who scored a game-high 24 points and became the 15th Chanticleer in program history to surpass 1,000 career points.

Adams had an opportunity to tie the game late, as Coastal (11-12, 5-7) had the last possession following a Shelby Richards free throw that gave UTA (13-10, 7-5) its two-point lead with 30 seconds remaining. The Chants called two timeouts during their final possession but were unable to get a quality look, and Adams’ last second shot missed the mark.

Adam’s 24 points came on 8-of-18 from the field, including six 3-pointers, one short of her career high. The senior guard entered the game with 999 career points, and reached the milestone early in the game as she scored Coastal’s first points at the free-throw line. Adams has 1,023 points following Saturday’s game, surpassing Angelica Henry (2010-14) to move into 14th among Coastal’s all-time leading scorers.

Naheria Hamilton collected her sixth double-double of the season – and third straight – scoring 16 points while pulling in a career-high 16 rebounds. The sophomore center also tied her personal best in blocks with five.
