CCU men fall to Vermont; Lady Chants blast UNCW

Zac Cuthbertson scored a game-high 23 points and had another game-high 13 rebounds, but it was not enough as Coastal Carolina fell to highly-regarded Vermont 80-67 in a semifinals game at the Island of the Bahamas Showcase. Jaylen Shaw scored 16 points and Artur Labinowicz added 10.

CCU had a bad night shooting, finishing the game shooting 43 percent from the field, and only hit six of their 18 three point field goals for 33 percent. CCU was out shot at the free throw line 27-12, but did manage to hit 11 of their free throws.

Vermont had four players in double digits with Ernie Duncan leading the team with 19. Trae Bell-Haynes and Drew Urquhart scored 15 each and Payton Henson added 11 as the Catamounts shot 51 percent from the field.

Following a Jaylen Shaw steal and score followed by a Cuthbertson goal, the Chanticleers held a 54-53 lead with 10:17 left in the game.

That would be the last time CCU would lead as Vermont went on a 10-0 run to lead 63-54 with eight minutes left, and the Chants were never able to catch back up.

* A stretch of 16 unanswered Coastal points during seven minutes of the third and fourth quarters helped propel the Chants to a 57-41 victory over UNC Wilmington Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center. Also aiding in the victory was the scoring effort of Jas Adams, who tallied a career-best 25 points.

Coastal improves to 2-1 with the victory while handing UNCW (2-1) its first loss of the season.

Adams shot 8-of-20 from the field. Half of her attempts were from beyond the arc, and she made four baskets from distance. The senior guard added five rebounds and led the Chants with three steals. Adams has led the Chants in scoring in each of the last two games, and has at least 15 points in each of Coastal’s three games this season.

Coastal’s scoring streak began with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter when DJ Williams hit a jumper, followed by an Adams 3-pointer and field goals from Breelyn Blanding and Kaylin West.

The streak continued into the fourth quarter with seven straight points, five of which were scored by Adams. UNCW broke the streak at 7:46 of the fourth, but Coastal had already taken a 15-point lead to essentially seal the win.
