CCU men lose to Eagles; Lady Chants win at buzzer

Senior forward Zac Cuthbertson and freshman point guard DeVante Jones combined for 41 points, but it wasn’t enough as Georgia Southern pulled away in the second half for a 79-74 win over Coastal Carolina in a Sun Belt Conference game Thursday night at the HTC Center.

Cuthbertson had 21 points and 9 rebounds, and Jones added 20 points and 6 rebounds, but Coastal Carolina slipped to 12-13 on the year with its fourth consecutive loss. The Chanticleers are now 6-7 in the conference. Georgia Southern grabbed its third win in a row and is now 17-10, 9-5.

The Eagles took the lead for good with a 7-0 run midway through the second half, giving them a 57-50 advantage after a driving layup by senior guard Tookie Brown at the 9:46 mark. From there, Georgia Southern closed out the game with its last 17 points coming from the free throw line. Its largest lead came on a couple of free throws by Brown that put the Eagles up 71-62 with 3:45 remaining.

Cuthbertson scored on a 3-point play to pull the Chanticleers to within 73-67 with 1:33 left, but Georgia Southern kept Coastal from getting any closer.

Women

* Coastal Carolina 76, Georgia Southern 73: The Coastal Carolina women trailed Georgia Southern for nearly 38 minutes of action in Thursday night’s game at Hanner Fieldhouse, but the Chants outscored the Eagles 28-18 in the fourth quarter to grind out a 76-73 win. DJ Williams scored 14 of her game-leading 25 points in the fourth, and Caitlin Roche knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds remaining.

Coastal (14-10, 6-7) trailed by as many 10 points in the second half and entered the fourth quarter down by seven. Naheria Hamilton scored Coastal’s first six points of the final frame before Williams took over.

With Georgia Southern (7-18, 2-12) leading by seven, Williams scored all 14 of her fourth-quarter points in the final four minutes of the game, including a three-point play that gave Coastal its first lead of the night, 73-72, with just 23 seconds remaining. GS’s Alexis Brown made one of two free-throw attempts to tie the game with 15 seconds to go before Roche drained the final shot.

Williams had 21 of her 25 points in the second half and finished the game 9-15 from the field and 6-9 at the line. Roche was Coastal’s second-leading scorer with 15 points and was just 2-11 from 3-point range before hitting the game-winner. Hamilton added 10 points and nine rebounds.
