CCU men, women score soccer shutouts on road

The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team had not played another opponent since a 1-0 win over UAB back on Sept. 2. After fleeing Conway to get away from Hurricane Florence the Chants made it back on the pitch against William & Mary and picked up where they left off; a shutout victory.

The Chants got a second half goal from Yazeed Matthews in the 78th minute and added an own goal in the 89th minute to pull out the 2-0 victory over the Tribe.

Matthews had three shots on the night, but after missing his second shot, he was able to rebound up his own miss and pick up the goal on the rebound to give CCU the only goal it would need.

Goalkeeper Chris Dattalo may have had the best match of his career. The senior New York native had a career-high five saves on the night leading CCU to its third consecutive shutout.

The match saw the hosts outshoot CCU 14-12, but CCU had a 4-3 edge in corners, and the Chants continued to attack the goal while being called for six offsides compared to none for W&M.

It was a physical game with each team picking up yellow cards and a total of 30 fouls were called, 22 of those on the Chants. The win pushes Coastal Carolina to 4-1 while the Tribe falls to 2-4.

The Chants are scheduled to host nationally-ranked and undefeated Portland Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

* Sunny Sigurvinsdottir scored the game-winner in the second overtime to give the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team a 1-0 Sunny Sigurvinsdottir scored the game-winner in the second overtime to give the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over defending Sun Belt Conference champions South Alabama, Friday evening in Mobile.

The win improved the Chanticleers record to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt action, while the Jaguars dropped to 3-6 and 1-1.

South Alabama applied offensive pressure throughout the whole match but was matched evenly by the CCU defense and goalie Rylee Atteberry having a career-high 11 saves while facing 26 shots.

Offensively, Coastal saved its best for the final overtime with three shots coming in the final two minutes of the match with Lauren Dabner sending a free kick from the left side and Sigurvinsdottir gathering it up for her second goal of the season.

Coastal Carolina will remain in Alabama to take on Troy on Sunday (Sept. 23), with the opening kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
