CCU shoots under par as team for top-five showing

For the ninth time in nine opportunities this season, the Coastal Carolina men’s golf team shot under par as a team, carding a 1-under 287 Sunday, and moved up one spot to finish in a tie for fifth with a 54-hole total of 853 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the par 72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges.

Coastal Carolina has finished among the top five in all three events this season and is a combined 27-under par. Coastal only had a total of four top-five finishes in the previous four years combined and most since collecting nine in the 2012-13 season, including three in that season’s fall schedule.

Also, the three-day total of 853 ties for the 11th-best, 54-hole team score in school history. In their last event, the Chanticleers had a team score of 847, the fourth-best finish in school history.

Penn State won the 15-team event with a score of 833, followed by Kent State (841), Louisville (843) and Missouri (846). Coastal tied with Tennessee for fifth.

“This was a big week for our program,” head coach Jim Garren said. “Looking at the most recent Golfweek rankings, we were behind 11 of the teams in this field. We competed hard, we fought all week and this team took a big-time step forward. Hands down, this was our best performance of the year. Now we need to get back to work and get better. We still left a lot of shots out there and that’s why we didn’t have a chance to win at the end. Individually, it was a big-time round by Andrew (Roy) today and it was nice to see Jonathan (Goth-Rasmussen) have a solid day. We will need that in our next event at Kiawah as it will be a six-count-five tournament, as opposed to the normal five-count-four.”

Thadd Obecny II moved up two spots and finished in a tie for 12th with a 5-under par 211. The senior was under par all three rounds, shooting a 71 in the final round after rounds of 71-69 in the first two days. He has finished no lower than 12th this fall and posted rounds of par of better in eight of his nine rounds with his lone round over par being a 2-over 74.

On Sunday, Obecny got to 2-under after an eagle on the par-5 4th hole. He dropped shots on holes 9 and 10 to fall back to even. However, he closed his round with seven pars and a birdie on the 13th hole to record his 1-under par 71.

Andrew Roy moved up 10 spots and tied for 65th with a final-round score of 70. He was even par at the turn with a birdie on the fourth hole and bogey on the ninth. He fell to 1-over with a bogey on the 10th hole. However, he had an eagle on the 14th hole and birdied the 15th. While he dropped a shot on the 17th, Roy bounced back to birdie his final hole for a 54-hole score of 224 (78-76-70).

Jonathan Goth-Rasmussen, playing as an individual, went from 83rd – second from last after an opening-round 81 – to finish in a tie for 49th with a total of 221 after shooting even par Saturday and firing a 4-under par 68 Sunday to jump 23 spots in the final round . The freshman started the day with a birdie and was 6-under, with no bogeys, through 15 holes. He did have a double bogey on the par-3 16th hole, but finished with a pair of pars for his career-best 68.

Morgan Deneen and Luis Ruiz tied for 31st, each with a 54-hole score of 216. Deneen jumped 14 spots on Sunday after carding a final-round score of 71. He had two bogeys and three birdies Sunday and was even par for the event with rounds of 74-71-71. Ruiz shot a final round 77 to finish at even par for 54 holes after shooting 67-72 in the first two days.

States Fort was tied for 36th, finishing at 1-over par with a total of 217 (70-72-75).

Coastal Carolina will close the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 29-31 at the East Bay Deli Kiawah Classic, played at Turtle Point Golf Club.
