CCU strikes early en route to shutout of Gamecocks

Coastal Carolina used two first-half goals to defeat South Carolina 2-0 in men’s soccer action at Eugene E. Stone Stadium.

The Chanticleers received a goal from Konstantinos Louvaris on an assist from Frantzdy Pierrot in the 12th minute to give CCU the early 1-0.

The second CCU goal came at the expense of the Gamecocks defense as a USC defender knocked the ball into the USC goal for an own goal in the 21st minute, giving the Chanticleers the two-goal lead.

In the second half neither team could get anything going as both goalies had outstanding outings.  CCU’s Braulio Linares-Ortiz went the distance for CCU picking up four saves in the shutout.

CCU finished the match out-shooting USC 13-12 with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

These two teams have now met 13 times on the pitch with the Chanticleers now having a 9-3-1 lead in the series, including the last two meetings.  CCU moves to 4-5 on the season while USC falls to 4-6-1.

The Chanticleers will be at home for their next two matches beginning with Tuesday Oct. 3 when they host UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 CCU will jump back into Sun Belt Conference action when they host Hartwick at 2 p.m.
