CCU volleyball captures first place on Senior Day

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team claimed sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt east division on Sunday afternoon with a three-set sweep of South Alabama (25-21, 25-14, 25-21). Sunday’s match at the HTC Center was Coastal’s last home match of the season, and last home match in the CCU careers of seniors Leah Hardeman, Kate Federico, Dora Lulic, Larissa Dos Santos and Leah Levert.

Coastal plays its final four matches of the regular season on the road, and the stretch begins with the Chants on top of the Sun Belt east at 14-7, 11-1. South Alabama holds second place at 15-7, 10-2. The Chants and Jaguars will meet again in Mobile, Ala. on Nov. 10.

The match featured strong defensive efforts from both sides, with Coastal holding slight advantages in both blocks (9-8) and digs (48-41).

Lulic paced Coastal with four blocks, with four other Chants recording multiple blocks as well. Sydney Alvis had 17 of Coastal’s 48 digs to lead all players in the match.

Sara Boothe and Federico split setting duties evenly, the former dishing out 15 assists to lead the match, and the latter 14. Federico also landed one of Coastal’s two service aces.

Hardeman was the only player to reach double figures in kills, landing 15 swings with a .243 hitting percentage. She missed a double-double by one dig, finishing second in the category for Coastal with nine. Eight of the senior’s kills came in the opening set, and she added a solo block to register nine points in the 25-21 set win.

Coastal went ahead quickly in the second set, taking an early 5-1 lead and riding a .286 hitting percentage to win the frame by a double-digit margin. Four Chants had multiple kills in the set, and Coastal tallied three blocks and 10 digs as a team to limit USA to hitting just .077.

With the third set tied at 12, Coastal went on a 6-2 run and forced USA into a timeout. It wasn’t enough to break the Chants momentum, however, as Coastal led by at least three points for the remainder of the set. The Jaguars were plagued by errors throughout the final period, including five service errors and four attacking errors.

Coastal begins its final four-match road swing next weekend in Georgia as it heads to Georgia Southern for a Friday match, and Georgia State for a Saturday match.
