CCU’s 2016 recruiting class reflects step up to Sun Belt

ccufoot-mogliaFor the Coastal Carolina University football program, a step up to the FBS level also means a step up in recruiting, and the 2016 class may be the deepest and most talented in program history.

With Coastal set to make its transition season from FCS and FBS in the fall, they will have 26 new players to help make the move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2017 and beyond. The following list shows reason for encouragement for the Chanticleers:

* Steven Bedosky, 6-4, 265, OL, Douglasville, Ga. / Landmark Christian HS: A two-star recruit by 247Sports.com and Rivals.com … Two-time, first team Class A All-State selection … Also tabbed Academic All-State … Selected first team All-Region 5-A as a senior and junior.

* C.J. Brewer, 6-2, 260, DL, Bowdon, Ga. / Bowdon HS: A two-start recruit by Rivals.com … First team AA All-State pick by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and second team AA All-State pick by the Georgia Spots Writers Association … Named Times-Georgian All-Area MVP and the Region 5-AA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

* Trey Carter, 6-1, 295, OL, Monroeville, Ala. / Monroe Academy: Prior to Coastal Carolina: A three-time Alabama Independent School Association All-State selection … Won the AISA Lineman of the Year Award as a senior and was a finalist for the honor as both a junior and sophomore … Selected to play in the 2015 AISA East-West All-Star game and was named Best Offensive Lineman for the West squad.

* Kyle Cathers, 6-4, 260, DL, Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum HS: Named Delaware’s 2015 Lineman of the Year as voted on by Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association board and the state’s high school football media … Added first team DIFCA All-State honors as a junior and senior … Selected to play in the 61st annual DFRC Blue-Gold football game.

* Jonathan Clayton, 6-3, 270, DL, Jacksonville, Fla. / Sandalwood HS : A two-star recruit by Scout.com … Sandalwood posted a 9-3 record and allowed just 17 points per game … Named Sandalwood’s Best Defensive Lineman as a junior.

* Larry Collins Jr., 6-3, 200, WR, Hopkins, S.C. / Lower Richland HS: A three-star recruit by 247Sports.com and ranked the ninth-best overall prospect in South Carolina … Participated in the 79th Annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and caught four passes for 55 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown.

* Victor Greene, 6-0, 215, RB, Fredericksburg, Va. / Courtland HS: A three-star recruit by 247Sports.com and the 54th-best prospect in Virginia … Named second team Group 4A All-State … Conference 19 Player of the Year as he rushed for 1,661 yards and 19 touchdowns … A two-time All-Area performer … His school’s all-time leader in career rushing yards (4,149) and rushing touchdowns (46).

* Jacqez Hairston, 5-8, 175, DB, Martinsville, Va. / Magna Vista HS: Two-time first team VHSL Group 3A All-State … Helped Magna Vista to back-to-back 3A state championships … Rushed for 352 yards (on 28 carries) and two touchdowns (60 and 80 yards) in the 2015 title game … In the 2014 championship game, rushed for 205 yards with a TD.

* T’qele Holmes, 6-0, 175, WR, Charleston, S.C. / West Ashley HS: Selected to play in the South Carolina North-South All-Star Game … Named first team All-Region 7-AAAA and second team All-Lowcountry … Recorded 23 receptions for 645 yards with nine touchdowns … Averaged 28 yards per reception as a junior.

* Amir Howard, 5-11, 185, DB, Ocala, Fla. / North Marion HS: A two-star recruit by Scout.com … Second team All-North Central Florida Elite Team and first team All-Marion County Interscholastic Athletic Conference … Credited with 99 tackles, the third-best total in the county, with 19.0 TFL and 6.5 sacks as senior … Team reached the second round of the 5A state championship … A MaxPreps Player of the Game after recording 13 versus Vangaurd (Sept. 2014).

* Tarron Jackson, 6-3, 230, DL, Aiken, S.C. / Silver Bluff HS: Selected to play for Team South Carolina in the Georgia-South Carolina Border Bowl as well as the South Carolina North-South game … Participated in the Blue-Grey All-American South Carolina Regional combine … A first team All-Aiken Standard selection.

* Alex James, 5-10, 180, RB, Florence, S.C. / Florence Christian School: A two-star recruit by 247Sports.com … Rated the 42nd-best all-purpose back in the nation and 46th-best overall prospect in South Carolina … Rushed for 1,872 yards and 22 touchdowns with 11 receptions for 232 and two scores as a senior.

* Chris Jones, 6-3, 270, OL, Grover, N.C. / Crest HS: Led Crest to back-to-back (2014 and 2015) 3A state championships with a perfect 32-0 record over the span and runner-up finish in 2013 … A Three-time first team All-South Mountain Athletic Conference pick … Honorable mention All-Cleveland County selection … Paved the way for Tre Harbison, who was the 2015 Cleveland County Co-Player of the Year and finished as the county’s all-time leading rusher (5,770 yards).

* Silas Kelly, 6-4, 205, LB, Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll Senior HS: A two-star recruit by 247Sports.com and rated the 52nd-best overall prospect in Maryland … Named small school (Class 2A/1A) first team All-State as a safety … Finished his career at South Carroll with 238 tackles (third-most in program history) and 10 interceptions (second-best in Cavaliers history).

* Jay King II, 6-2, 185, WR, Nashville, Tenn. / Hillsboro HS: A three-star recruit by 247Sports.com … The sixth-best wide receiver and the 42nd-best overall prospect in Tennessee … Selected to play in the Toyota East-West All-Star Classic … As a senior, only played in eight games due to injury and caught 33 passes for 573 yards and seven scores.

* Ryan Lee, 6-1, 190, WR, Columbia, S.C. / Spring Valley HS: Played quarterback as a junior and senior while playing running back as a sophomore at Spring Valley … Tallied 1,231 yards of total offense as season with 18 touchdowns … Scored 11 TDs as a junior.

* Greg Latushko, 5-10, 180, CB, Franklin Lakes, N.J. / Ramapo HS: Tabbed first team corner back All-Bergen County as selected by the Bergen County Coaches Association … As a senior, caught 33 passes for 628 with eight touchdowns and added six interceptions on defense.

* Laqavious Paul, 6-0, 210, LB, Lake City, Fla. / Columbia HS: A two-star recruit by 247Sports.com … Named second team Associated Press Class 7A All-State … Tabbed first team All-First Coast by the Jacksonville Times-Union and All-Area by the Gainesville Sun … Tallied 131 tackles, 19 sacks and an interception as a senior.

* Calvin Smith, 6-0, 195, DB, Morristown, Tenn. / Morristown-Hamblen HS West: Selected to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas … A two-star recruit by 247Sports.com … Named first team 5A All-State by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association … Selected to play in the East vs. West Tennessee All-Star Classic.
