CCU’s Quolas lands spot on prestigious All-Region team

Coastal Carolina’s Kiana Quolas added to her list of honors on Thursday as she was selected to the NFCA Division I All-Region teams.

Quolas was named to the Southeast Region’s Second Team as a pitcher, becoming the second Chanticleer to earn All-Region honors and the first underclassmen. She joins Meagen Johnson, who was a first-team selection as a senior in 2006.

The NFCA’s Southeast Region is comprised of 28 schools from the Big South, ACC, SEC, Atlantic Sun and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences and includes 11 teams that qualified for this year’s NCAA Tournament, with No. 2 Florida, No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Missouri among them.

Quolas was named the Big South Pitcher of the Year last week after leading the conference in ERA, wins, shutouts and opponents’ batting average. The right-hander finished her sophomore season 22-10 with a 1.94 ERA, 151 strikeouts and just 40 walks in 206 innings pitched. She strung together 37 consecutive scoreless innings over eight games in February, was selected the Big South Pitcher of the Week five times and already ranks in a tie for third in school history with 46 victories. She also ranked among the top four on the team in batting, home runs, RBIs and doubles.

“I’m so proud of the season Kiana had this year,” head coach Kelley Green said. “This recognition is fantastic for her and our program.”

Quolas is the lone member from an FCS school to earn All-Southeast Region honors as a pitcher. She is joined on the second team by Ellen Renfroe of Tennessee, Lacey Waldrop of Florida State and Emily Weiman of N.C. State. The first team pitchers were Chelsea Thomas of Missouri and Hannah Rogers of Florida.

A total of four players from the Big South were honored as Longwood’s Megan Baltzell, Brooke Short and Kori Nishitomi were selected to the Southeast’s First Team. Each of the All-Region selections are now eligible for the NFCA Division I All-American Teams, to be announced on May 29.
