CCU’s Remillard extends hit streak to 12 in win over Zips

Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the first inning and three in the fifth to claim a 7-3 victory over Akron Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Chanticleer Classic, played at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chanticleers improve to 10-10 on the season, winning all three games this past weekend. (Coastal beat Michigan on Friday 8-4 and 6-2 Saturday.) Akron falls to 2-16.

Will Remillard ran his hit streak to 12 games with a 2-for-3 outing Sunday, adding two RBI and two runs scored. The sophomore catcher started the season 3-for-21, including four straight hitless games prior to the streak, and is batting .323 this season.

Freshman first baseman Tyler Chadwick raised his season batting average to .500 (7-for-14) after going 2-for-4 Sunday with an RBI and run scored.

Anthony Marks drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, stole second and took third on a ground out. After Alex Buccilli walked, Remillard, Colin Hering and Chadwick delivered consecutive RBI singles to left field.

The Chanticleers added a run in the second as Marks walked, Luke Willis walked and Buccilli was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Remillard was also hit by a pitch to force home Marks.

The Zips cut their deficit in half (4-2) in the third. Akron loaded the bases with one out as Jared Turocy doubled, Joey Havrilak was hit by a pitch and Matt Rembielak singled. With two out, Matt Larocca drove in two with a single to right-center field.

In the fifth, the Chanticleers pushed their advantage to 7-2. Remillard singled, moved to second on Chadwick’s single and scored on Creel’s RBI single. Two batters later, Nick Oberg brought home Chadwick with a single and Creel later scored on a wild pitch.

Akron took advantage of a CCU error to score once in the ninth for the 7-3 final. Billy Salem hit a one-out double that landed on the left-field line. After Turocy was hit by a pitch, Salem scored on a throwing error on a ground out.

Alex Cunningham (1-1) was credited with the win. The freshman pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Starter Tyler Poole struck out three and walked none, but allowed six hits and two runs in four innings pitched.

For Akron, starter Jon Pusateri (1-4) suffered the loss. He allowed three hits, four runs and four walks in 1.1 innings.

Coastal Carolina will return to action Tuesday at Wake Forest at 5 pm.
