CF’s Hatfield, boys team claim Region 6-5A titles

All five Carolina Forest boys runners placed in the top 12 to win the Region 6-5A title on Tuesday, and Lady Panther Brianna Hatfield captured medalist honors among the girls on the Freedom Florence course.

Carolina Forest’s Michael Mohr (17:24) and Jacob Dulson (17:29) finished fifth and sixth, respectively – just ahead of Conway’s Monroe Thompkins (17:42), who claimed the seventh and final spot on the all-region squad as an unattached runner. Cullen Dore (18:01), Jonathan Penter (18:16) and Austin Smith (18:21) placed 10th through 12th to pace the Panthers to the team title with 41 points.

St. James (63) saw Jayson Brady (17:14) and Ryan Hughes (17:16) run to third and fourth-place finishes, good for all-region honors. Teammates Kyle Bailey (18:46) was 16th, Deep Patel (19:18) was 21st, and Sam Oppelt (19:38) was 23rd top round out the Sharks’ scoring.

Socastee (72) failed to place a runner in the top 12 but got some consistent times from Zachary Evans (18:22), Ward Wilson (18:27), Lucas Davis (18:49), Tyler Ward (18:47) and Kyler Evans (18:50), who finished between 13th and 18th to make up the Braves’ top five finishers and earn third place.

In the girls division, Socastee (61) edged St. James (62) by a single position. Laura Del Pozo (22:37) finished fourth and Kyla Marques (23:08) placed sixth to make the all-region team. Fianna Steves (23:50) finished eighth, Kayleigh Lodge (24:48) was 13th, and Maggie Weaver (26:10) was 20th to round out the Lady Braves’ scoring.

St. James’ Taylor Morotta (22:32) placed third and Bryanna Warner (22:51) finished fifth for all-region status. Teammates Lori Nerdahi (24:15) was 10th, Hayley Spears (26:34) was 21st and Zoe Mason (26:48) completed the top five for the Lady Sharks.

Hatfield (21:51) ran away with first place by 17 seconds over runner-up Caelin Sloan of South Florence (83), which edged Carolina Forest (89) for third place.

Carolina Forest, Socastee and St. James boys and girls teams earned berths in next weekend’s Class 5A Lower State Championships.
