Chanticleers try to win for first time at East Carolina

Coastal Carolina (9-1) will put its four-game winning streak on the line against the East Carolina Pirates on Monday night in Greenville, N.C.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, where the Chanticleers have never won. But then again, they have rarely been this hot.

Coastal Carolina is coming off an 86-61 win over Lynchburg College on Friday, when Anthony Raffa and Chris Gradnigo combined to score 44 points to help the Chants improve to 9-1 for the first time in school history.

The Chanticleers opened last season with a 2-2 mark before winning 22 games in a row to tie a school record with 28 wins on the season.

The Chants also welcomed the return of guard Danny Nieman after serving a one-semester suspension due to a violation of the student conduct policy.

The senior from Concord, N.C. started all 34 games in the Chanticleer backcourt last season where he averaged 6.2 points, 3.03 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. Nieman recorded four points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in eight minutes against Lynchburg.

East Carolina is coming off a 71-62 win against UNC Greensboro on Friday night in Greensboro, N.C. The Pirates had lost three straight after opening the season 4-1, with the only loss coming against Big South Conference opponent Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.

The Pirates are led by Miguel Paul who is averaging 16.2 points a game, 49 assists, 22 steals, and 22 three-pointers. Robert Sampson leads ECU with 6.5 rebounds while Darrius Morrow is averaging 12.6 points and 5.9 boards.

Entering Monday’s game, East Carolina leads the all-time series 4-3. The Chanticleers defeated the Pirates, 59-58 last season at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Dec. 18. Coastal has never defeated ECU in Greenville. The Pirates topped the Chants 89-64 on Jan. 2, 2008 in Greenville.
