Chants get back on winning track by beating top-20 foe

The Chanticleer win gives CCU a 20-13-4 all-time advantage over Radford and snapped a 10-match home winning streak by the Highlanders, who is the two-time defending Big South regular season champion. Coastal improves to 2-4-1 on the season while Radford falls to 6-2.

The Chanticleer offense came out firing on all cylinders, tallying four shots in the first seven minutes of play. Shot number four found the back of the net as David Raizes sent a cross into the box in which the Highlander defense misplayed. Coastal’s Melchor was there to take advantage, tapping in the ball into the net at the 7:18 mark.

Radford’s first shot did not come until the 20th minute, when CCU keeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz saved a Finn Tiedemann shot attempt.

Radford controlled play for a spell and, after four straight shots on goal, the Highlanders took advantage of a Chanticleer foul just outside the box. Kieran Roberts took the free kick, hitting the back of the net past a diving Linares-Ortiz from the left side. The Roberts goal knotted the match at one in the 31st minute.

Halftime saw Coastal Carolina hold an 8-6 advantage in shots with both teams taking four shots on goal.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Radford had two shots on frame off the boot of Evan Szklennik, but was unable to shake Linares-Ortiz, who finished with six saves.

The Chanticleers broke the tie in the 69th minute as Frantzdy Pierrot fired a cross from the far left side to Espinoza, who one-touched the cross to just inside the far post, giving Coastal Carolina a 2-1 lead.

Radford managed three shots after the Chanticleer goal, but the three attempts were blocked.

Coastal will play the fourth of its four-match road swing on Wednesday (Sept. 28) with a trip to College of Charleston. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Patriots Point. The Chanticleers will return home next Saturday (Oct. 1) and host Old Dominion at 1 pm.
