Chants, Moglia hit ground running in first spring drill

The first practice of the Joe Moglia era was a crisp two hour and 20 minute session in shorts helmets Thursday evening as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers held the first of 15 spring practices.

“I have been waiting for this day for quite some time and it met every expectation I had,” said Moglia, who replaced former head coach David Bennett in December.

“I thought we came out with great focus and attention to details. We were able to have numerous reps because our guys were mentally ready for this practice. I thought the tempo was outstanding and I cannot wait to get back on this practice field.”

That wait will not be long as the Chants will practice Friday evening. To ensure all the student-athletes meet their academic and athletic responsibilities, the team will practice each Thursday and Friday evening, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons for four weeks.

The culmination of the drills will be the annual Spring Game, held April 14 at 1 pm in Brooks Stadium. The Spring Game will join women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and track & field as part of the 2012 Spring Spirit Weekend.

Like, Coach Moglia, senior Andrae Jacobs has been anticipating this day.

“It was great to get out here and play football,” Jacobs said. “We are comfortable with the staff and I think this team as a whole has bought into the system and philosophy.”

The first half of practice was focused on fundamentals. Also, as promised by Coach Moglia in his press conference, there were two segments of practice devoted to the special teams.

“Every opportunity I have had to speak, I have talked about the importance of special teams and we will be excellent in this phase of the game,” Moglia said. “There is nothing more devastating in a football game than having a big play on special teams.”

The practice closed with the offense facing the defense. Both units looked good at times, but the defense produced two interceptions in the final segment.

“Practice overall was great,” Moglia said. “I especially liked the way we closed practice. There is some great competition going on out there. Every kid is starting fresh and feels he has a chance to play. Obviously those who started and played more last year, have an advantage at this point.

“However, they see the people behind them working hard and cannot afford a slip up. Every position on the field is an open competition and we will continually evaluate who most deserves the top spot on the depth chart.”
