Chants open Sun Belt title defense with loss to GSU

Coastal Carolina began defense of its 2016 Sun Belt Championship with its 2017 conference opener at Georgia Southern and came out on the short end of a 2-1 match.

The Eagles got the jump on CCU scoring two quick goals in the opening minutes of the match to take a quick 2-0 lead. It was a lead the Chanticleers could not make up over the rest of the match.

Gonzalo Talvera scored in the second minute for the Eagles and Aldair Cortes added their second goal in the fourth minute. Both goals were assisted by Javier Carbonell.

Following those two goals, the Chants defense stiffened and only allowed one more shot on goal the final 85+ minutes of the match.

CCU cut the lead to one goal when Morten Timm was able to direct a touch pass into the front of the net where Frantzdy Pierrot scored the goal in the 82nd minute.

From there the Chants continued to press the action with another with two more shots on goal and two corner kicks over the final hectic minutes, but were not able to find the back of the net.

CCU outshot the Eagles 11-10 and held a 6-3 lead in shots on goal. CCU was also called offsides five times and held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.

CCU is now 2-4 on the season and 0-1 to begin conference action while Georgia Southern evens its record at 3-3 and has a 1-0 conference record.

The Chants will be back home for its next two matches, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they host College of Charleston at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
