Chants rally in 10th inning to knock off Georgia State

The relentless Chanticleers scored a run in each of the eighth, ninth and 10th innings with substitute Morgan Hyde delivering a bases-loaded RBI single in the extra frame to propel Coastal Carolina to a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Georgia State Panthers in Sun Belt Conference play at the GSU Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The one-run win picks up the series win for the Chants, who will be going for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.  The Chants have won two-straight games and are 2-1-1 this season in extra-inning contests.

Hyde came up with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning to face new pitcher Rhett Harper. In his lone at-bat in the game, after entering the contest in the previous inning as a pinch runner, Hyde hit the first pitch through the left side of the infield to score Scott McKeon from third in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Hyde (1-for-1, RBI, SB) had the game-winning RBI in the 10th, while fellow first-year Chant Jake Wright (3-for-4, BB, RBI, run) had the go-ahead RBI in the top of the ninth.

Parker Chavers (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs) scored the tying run in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch, while Cameron Pearcey (1-for-5, 3B, run, SB) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on Wright’s RBI single. Senior Zach Biermann (3-for-5, RBI) drove in the other RBI in the win.

For the Panthers offensively, outfielder Luke Leonard (2-for-3, HR, BB, 2 RBIs, run) had the big solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings, while designated hitter Brandon Bell (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI, run) and first baseman Ryan Glass (1-for-4, 2 RBI) combined to drive in the other three RBIs in the loss.

Sophomore Zach McCambley (6-2) held on for the win, as he pitched the final 4.2 innings of the contest after entering the game in the sixth with the bases loaded. McCambley gave up one earned run on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts in the relief win.
