Coastal settles for 1-all draw with visiting High Point

ccusoc-carmargocloseHigh Point scored in the first half and Coastal Carolina matched the goal in the second stanza, but neither team was able to break through for the decisive score as the sides played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

The draw, Coastal’s first since knotting Bowling Green 3-3 on Sept. 9, 2012, moved the Chanticleers to 11-5-1  (6-1-1 Big South) and High Point to 9-6-2 (6-1-1 Big South). By virtue of the league point standings, both teams secured a home match in the quarterfinal round of the upcoming Big South Tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be finalized following the conclusion of Saturday’s slate of matches.

Coastal controlled the possession through the opening 20 minutes of play as High Point strategically played its pressure to set up the counter attack. The Panthers’ strategy paid dividends in the 21st minute as Adam Storm split the Coastal defense and played a long ball ahead to Avery Ryan just outside the 18-yard box. Ryan took a single touch before chipping the ball past the keeper for the games’ opening goal and his six of the season.

Coastal nearly leveled the match in the 31st minute as Martin Melchor connected on an Elis Bjornsson corner kick, but Melchor’s header was met by an acrobatic save from High Point’s Kody Palmer. High Point then tested Coastal’s Devin Cook-Perales on a set piece following a foul, but the junior stopper was there to make an impressive fingertip save off the line.

Coastal returns to the friendly confines of the CCU Soccer Stadium for its final home match of the regular season Saturday against Longwood. Prior to the 2 p.m. kickoff the Chanticleers will recognize seniors Ricky Garbanzo, Ollivier Gueguen, Kevin Le Bras, Michael Millay, Shawn McLaws, Pierre Morin, Joel Perez, Mark Petrus, Ridge Robinson, Jordan Tyler and Uchenna Uzo for their accomplishments and contributions to the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer program.
