Chants take hot streak, new ranking to North Carolina

After starting the season 4-8, the Coastal Carolina baseball team has posted a 20-4 record since then, has won 17 of its last 19 and reeled off nine consecutive victories to break into this week’s Collegiate Baseball top 30 at No. 26.

The last time Coastal baseball won as many as 10 straight came in 2010 when CCU put together a 17-game win streak. Ironically, win number 10 in the streak was a 12-4 win at then #24 North Carolina on April 14. This year’s Chants go for their 10th straight win against the top-ranked Tar Heels on Tuesday.

During Coastal Carolina’s current nine-game win streak, the Chanticleers have out-scored their opponents 60-20, batted .292 with 13 doubles, four triples and four home runs. On the mound, the CCU staff has posted a 1.53 ERA over the span with 65 strikeouts versus 27 walks in 88 innings with an opponent batting average of .214.

Over its last 19 games – posting a 17-2 record, Coastal is batting .307 and has a 2.03 ERA.

The Chanticleers will put their nine-game win streak on the line Tuesday in Chapel Hill, N.C., facing consensus #1 North Carolina. First pitch is set for 6 pm and the game will be available on ESPN3.

This will mark Coastal’s second trip to Boshamer Stadium this season. The two teams added a game previous not on the schedule on Monday, Feb. 18 as each team had a game rained out in the opening weekend. The Tar Heels claimed a 7-1 victory despite being held to just eight hits. UNC’s offense was aided by drawing six walks and four CCU errors.

Coastal Carolina and North Carolina have met on 65 previous occasions with the Tar Heels owning a 40-15 advantage overall and a 26-10 advantage in Chapel Hill. This will mark the eighth time Coastal has played a team that is ranked #1 in the nation. Coastal is 1-6 in such games with a 7-3 win over #1 North Carolina on Feb. 24, 2009.
