CCU wins two-day pitchers’ duel with walk-off home run

A great pitcher’s duel between Coastal Carolina and Radford could not be completed Friday due to severe thunderstorms. The game was postponed in the middle of the eighth inning with the game tied 0-0.

The game resumed 20 hours later, but would not end quickly as #26 Coastal Carolina used a 15th-inning, Ted Blackman walk-off home run to claim a 1-0 win over Radford Saturday evening at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Coastal improves to 25-13, 11-2 in the Big South and Radford falls to 20-16, 7-6. The teams turned around and played the originally-scheduled game two of the series, which started at 7:49 pm.

The game, which started at 6 pm Friday, was suspended at 8:33 pm and resumed at 4:32 pm Saturday for a delay of 19:59. The teams would play a total of nine innings Saturday, taking an additional 2:23 before Blackman’s two-out home run to end the contest.

Ryan Connolly (3-3) started the game Saturday and would pitch a career-high seven innings to get the win. The senior scattered four hits, walked four and struck out three.

The teams combined to leave 30 runners on base – 19 for Coastal and 11 for Radford. Both teams would have numerous chances to end the game. In fact, After Coastal put a runner on third with one out in the 11th, Radford intentionally walked two batter to load the bases. James Woods would come out of the bullpen and get a pop out. Radford then turned to Daniel Bridgeman, who would run the count to 3-2 before getting a strikeout to extend play.

For Coastal on Friday, starter Ben Smith left after six innings, allowing one infield hit in the second and two walks with nine strikeouts. Patrick Corbett avoided a jam in the seventh, leaving a runner on third before retiring the side in order in the eighth before the game was stopped.

For Radford Friday, Tyler Costello had gone the distance, scattering seven hits over seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Costello avoided a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and a first-and-third jam in the sixth.

Blackman finished the game going 2-for=-6 with two walks, while Jacob May, Colin Hering and Nick Oberg each had two hits. Chris Suseck, who was a late addition to the starting lineup, went 3-fo-6 for his second career, three-hit game.
