UPDATE: Chiefs-Seahawks potential play-in game set

nmbhoops-mbThe Myrtle Beach High boys basketball team may be ranked No. 1 in the state, but they may have to settle for No. 2 in their own region.

If Myrtle Beach defeats Georgetown at home on Monday, the two teams will meet for a third time on Tuesday to settle the region title at Conway High at 7:30 p.m.

The visiting Seahawks (17-6 overall, 8-1 Region 7-3A) suffered a 55-52 loss to No. 6 North Myrtle Beach on Saturday night for their first region defeat. In a hotly contested game throughout, the Chiefs (20-4, 9-1) trailed by two points with just under 4 minutes remaining when they got hot from the field and turned up the heat on defense.

North Myrtle Beach hit three unanswered baskets to take the lead for good, forcing Myrtle Beach to foul in the final 45 seconds. The Chiefs put it away at the free throw line but the physical play in the final frames may have led to the post-game fireworks.

North Myrtle Beach twin brothers Matt and Josh Lindsey once again led the way for the Chiefs, scoring 20 and 15 points respectively. Myrtle Beach got 18 points and nine rebounds from Solomon Cooper and 13 points from Anthony McNeil.

* North Myrtle Beach 50, Myrtle Beach 45: Fresh off a disappointing defeat to Socastee just 24 hours earlier, the Lady Chiefs (15-9 overall, 5-5 Region 7-3A) dealt the visiting Lady Seahawks (12-10, 7-2) their second straight defeat and kept their playoff hopes alive.

Myrtle Beach clinched the region title with a loss by second-place Wilson, backing into the title after back-to-back defeats. The Lady Seahawks host Georgetown on Monday before entering the playoffs as a top seed.

North Myrtle Beach was able to take over third place with its big win combined with Socastee’s 41-31 loss to St. James on Saturday.  The Lady Sharks defeat Wilson on Monday, they would face the Lady Chiefs in a tiebreaker and the third seed, with the loser earning the fourth and final playoff spot.

The Lady Chiefs certainly looked like a playoff contender Saturday, outrebounding Myrtle Beach by a 56-36 margin and winning the battle of second-chance points by a 26-6 score. Those stats proved pivotal in the outcome.

NMB senior Marci Chestnut and freshman Aquera Johnson recorded double-doubles for the Lady Chiefs. Johnson scored a team-high 20 points with 12 rebounds and Chestnut tallied 14 points and 14 boards to frustrate the Lady Seahawks.

Myrtle Beach led 32-23 at the half but was outscored 13-2 in the critical third period. Playing without injured standout Nia Sumpter, the Lady Seahawks got a game-high 25 points from Keocia Walker. Kiana Adderton battled for a game-high 18 rebounds.
