Class 5A: Tigers, Panthers defeated in second round

This looked like it could be the year for Conway High football team’s state title hopes. Spring Valley had other ideas, upsetting the top-seeded Tigers 35-28 at The Backyard in Friday night’s second-round playoff game.

Led by quarterback Quincy Hill, the Vikings erupted for five touchdowns in the first half and held off a late comeback bid by the Tigers (10-2), whose rally was stopped by a late pass interference no-call on fourth down. Conway’s reaction resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that essentially ended the potential tying drive in the final seconds.

But the Tigers lost the game in the first half, as Hill rushed and passed for touchdowns to lead the Vikings to 35 first-half points. Conway got short touchdown runs from Daiquawn Clark and Antonio Long to trail 35-14 at the half.

Conway’s defense shut down the Vikings in the second half, but the Tigers were plagued by turnovers until late in the third period when quarterback D’Wuan Grainger hit Xavier Kinlaw with a 50-yard TD bomb. Following a big stop by the defense, Long scored his second rushing TD to cut the deficit to 35-28 with 5 minutes remaining.

Conway’s defense got the ball back for the offense, which drove into Spring Valley territory before the controversial no-call. The loss ends the Tigers season that saw them claim the Region 6-5A championship and earn a No. 4 state ranking.

* Fort Dorchester 55, Carolina Forest 13: The Panthers (6-6) saw their season come to a close in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs against the No. 1-ranked Patriots (12-0).

Fort Dorchester scored in almost every way possible, piling up more points on defense and special teams than the offense in the first half. The Pats used a rushing touchdown, passing TD, punt return and two interception returns for TDs en route to a 35-0 halftime lead.

The Pats stretched their lead to 48-0 before Carolina Forest broke up the shutout on Marquavious Collier’s TD run late in the third. The Pats ran out the clock to advance to the Class 5A Lower State semifinals.
