Coaches pile up sandbags for CNB Kickoff Classic

Bad news for all Grand Strand high school football fans; none of the area’s teams are going to be very good this season.

At least that’s according to the coaches, who took turns bad-mouthing their own teams and lowering expectations at Tuesday’s CNB Kickoff Classic press conference. It’s one of the oldest coaching tricks in the book.

“I’m never going to get fired for bragging too much before the season,” joked Conway coach Chuck Jordan, whose Tigers went 8-4 last year. “I might get fired for something else, but it won’t be for bragging.”

The other nine coaches followed Jordan’s cue, including one of his former players, Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson. Despite his Seahawks’ high-flying offense attack that rolled up hundreds of points and an 11-2 record last year, Wilson was preaching the same doom and gloom.

“We only have four starters back on offense and two of those are playing new positions,” said Wilson, trying to keep a straight face. “Honestly, I don’t know how we’re going to move the ball down the field.”

Of course, some of the coaches weren’t joking when they sang the pity song. Second-year St. James coach Mark Fischer is hoping to improve on his inaugural 3-7 campaign, Socastee coach Tim Renfrow is trying to replace his entire offensive line following a 5-7 season.

Carolina Forest coach Drew Hummel faces a tougher schedule in hopes of improving on back-to-back 7-4 campaigns in hopes of reaching the playoffs. Third-year North Myrtle Beach coach Perry Woolbright and his Chiefs are riding a 22-game losing streak and are hoping to snap it this season.

“If our offense is half as good as Mickey’s, we will be all right,” Woolbright joked.

All six Grand Strand schools will get the chance to put their weaknesses to the test on Friday when the CNB Kickoff Classic is held at the Backyard at Conway High. Five half-game scrimmages will be held beginning at 6 p.m.

Socastee takes on Aynor in the opener, followed by St. James vs. Waccamaw, Carolina Forest vs. Green Sea Floyds, Myrtle Beach vs. Loris and Conway vs. North Myrtle Beach in the nightcap.
