Coastal knocks off Albany, ex-Big South foe Winthrop

ccubase-36Coastal Carolina completed a mixed doubleheader sweep with a 14-0, seven-inning win over Albany Saturday night as part of the Tidelands Health Classic at Springs Brooks Stadium. The teams mutually decided to stop the game after seven innings.

The 18th-ranked Chanticleer defeated Winthrop, 8-3, earlier in the day and improved to 8-5 on the season. Albany, which walked 11 and hit Chanticleers four times, falls to 3-3. Coastal will close the Tidelands Health Classic by hosting San Francisco at noon on Sunday.

Coastal only needed eight hits in the win, two being home runs. Billy Cooke hit a leadoff dinger and Wood Myers sealed the game with a grand slam in the sixth. Coastal scored six runs by either drawing a walk or being hit by a pitch.

With all the excitement Coastal’s offense was creating, CCU pitcher Jason Bilous (1-0) was quietly turning in his career-best performance. The sophomore was credited with his first career shutout and complete game while allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts.

In the opener, Kyle Skeels drove in three and Rafi Vazquez escaped bases-loaded jams in the seventh and eighth innings to earn his first career save to lead #18 Coastal Carolina to an 8-3 win over Winthrop in game one of a mixed doubleheader in the Tidelands Health Classic Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.

Despite not factoring in the decision, CCU All-American Andrew Beckwith struck out a career-high 10 in 5.2 innings.

In the eighth, Vazquez once again found himself in a bases loaded jam with two outs, but once again escaped by getting a strikeout for the third out. Coastal rode that momentum in the bottom of the frame. Peyton Isaacson hit a leadoff single and was lifted for pinch runner Cameron Pearcey. After a Matt Beaird walk, Jordan Gore tried twice to move the runners up, but fouled off two bunts before lining an RBI single to right. Pearcey scored on Gore’s hit and Coastal had runners on first and third with no outs.

Austin Kitchen (1-1) got the win in relief. He worked 1.0 inning and struck out two.
