Coastal lacrosse nets first victory in program history

The Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse team had eight players record multiple goals as the Chants earned the first win in the program’s history by defeating the Kennesaw State Owls 21-12.

With the win, Coastal advances to 1-4 on the season, while Kennesaw remains winless at 0-4.

Freshman midfielder Kasey Griese scored the first goal of her collegiate career, then proceeded to score three more to lead the Chants offensively. Keri White, Charlotte O’Leary and Rachel Ferrara each netted three goals, while Kimmy DeLonge, McKynsey Douglas, Caitlin Kratzer and Paige Timberg added to the Chants’ total with two goals each. Along with her three goals, Keri White won five draw controls, while Kimmy DeLonge grabbed four ground balls to pace the Chants.

Kennesaw’s midfielder Senneca Ward had a good day offensively for the Owls, scoring six goals on six shots and adding four draw controls on the day. Emily Collins also contributed heavily for the Owls, adding four goals on nine shots. Taylor Southerland and Jessica Alderdice rounded out Kennesaw’s scoring with one goal apiece.

The first half of the game was full of scoring, as no more than five minutes of game time elapsed without either team scoring a goal.

For the first time this season, the Chants put the first point on the board when Kimmy DeLonge tweaked the twine just 15 seconds into the game. Kennesaw responded quickly, scoring 14 seconds later to even the score at 1-1.

The Chants then built up a 5-3 lead after receiving goals from Griese, White, McKynsey and Ferrara. Emily Collins of the Owls would tie the score once again after scoring consecutive goals a little over two minutes apart. Rachel Ferrara of the Chants responded by slotting two consecutive markers of her own, giving Coastal a lead that would not be given up for the remainder of the game.

After ending the first half with a three goal margin, the Chants continued to add to their lead as Keri White notched the first goal for Coastal in the second. The Chants then proceeded to outscore the Owls 10-4 in the second half, receiving goals from White, Griese, O’Leary, Timberg and Kratzer.

Coastal led Kennesaw in almost every statistical category including shots (35-22), ground balls (27-18) and draw controls (19-15). The Chants also recorded goals on 10 of their 16 free position shots.

Goalie Trista Kuehn earned the first win of her Coastal career, making four saves in the game. Coastal’s back-up goalie Stephanie Torosian also saw time in net for the Chants, taking Kuehn’s place after the Chants had built a sizable lead.

The Chants will return home this week for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday against visiting St. Francis (Pa.).
