Coastal leads Big South’s Sasser Cup standings

ccuhoops-0dribbleWith the Big South Conference’s spring championship season beginning next week, the League announced today that Coastal Carolina University is in first-place for the Conference’s 2013-14 George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy following the winter athletic season.

The Chanticleers have accumulated 133.25 points in nine sports for a Conference-best 14.81 average.  High Point is in second in the overall standings with its average of 14.11 (127 points in nine sports), while Liberty sits in third-place at 13.68 (136.75 points in 10 sports).

Coastal Carolina has won or shared five Conference titles during the 2013-14 season — women’s cross country, men’s soccer, football (co-champion), women’s indoor track & field and men’s basketball.  Coastal Carolina, which was second in the standings at the conclusion of the fall season, last won the Sasser Cup in 2006-07.

Radford is in fourth-place in the Sasser Cup standings with its average of 10.89 (98 points in nine sports).  Winthrop is fifth at 10.17 (91.5 points in nine sports), while Campbell is sixth with its 9.89 average (89 in nine sports).  Longwood stands seventh with its 8.00 average (48 points in six sports), while UNC Asheville holds the eighth position at 7.56 (68 points in nine sports).  VMI (7.34 average; 58.75 points in eight sports), Gardner-Webb (7.15; 71.5 points in 10 sports), Charleston Southern (5.83; 52.5 points in nine sports) and Presbyterian College (4.53; 36.25 in eight sports) round out the Sasser Cup standings.

In addition to the overall lead, Coastal Carolina holds the top position in the Men’s All-Sports Award race.  The Chanticleers own an average of 15.44 points for a +0.94 lead over second-place High Point (14.50).  The Panthers have a +3.15 lead over third-place Liberty (11.35).

Liberty currently leads the Women’s Sports All-Sports Award race with its 16.00 average.  The Lady Flames are ahead of Coastal Carolina (14.30) and High Point (13.80) entering the spring championship season.
