Coastal returns to top 10 in polls as season nears end

ccusoc-headerThe Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team has re-entered the top-10 in two national polls after reeling of four consecutive wins, including one over a ranked Hofstra squad. In addition, senior forward Tobenna Uzo was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.

Coastal is ranked as high as ninth by College Soccer News, while holding the No. 10 spot in the NSCAA poll and the No. 11 slot in the TopDrawerSoccer.com top-25.

Uzo played a major role in both of the Chanticleers’ two wins last week. He provided the game-winning assist on Bryce Follensbee’s 83rd minute game winner against then-22nd-ranked Hofstra. Uzo then scored both of Coastal’s goals, including the game winner in the 106th minute at Longwood. His first goal of the game gave CCU a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute. The multi-goal game was Uzo’s second of the season and his first since the Aug. 30 at VCU. The senior attempted seven shots on the week with three falling on frame.

The National Team of the Week honor is the seventh earned by a Chanticleer this season. Uzo joins goalkeeper Fernando Pina (three National Team of the Week plaudits for the week ending Sept. 1), defender Gutierrez (one National Team of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 7), midfielder Sergio Camargo (one National Team of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 28) and Tommy Gudmundsson (one National Team of the Week award for the week ending Oct. 18) as Chants to be recognized by a national publication.

The Chanticleers hold an 11-1-1 overall record and a 5-1-0 Big South mark with three league matches and a nonconference match at South Carolina left to play. The Chants’ .885 win percentage ranks fourth-best in the nation behind unbeaten and untied Creighton, North Carolina (.900) and Denver (.893). Moreover, both the team’s 0.60 goals against average and 0.833 save percentage rank ninth nationally. Offensively, Coastal’s 6.0 points per game ranks 11th-best in the NCAA, while 2.08 goals per game ranks 13th.

Coastal, which currently owns 15 Big South points by way of its five conference victories, faces rival Winthrop on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.  at 7:30 p.m. The contest, which is now a neutral site affair, will be played on the artificial turf surface at Queens’ Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. The Chants then host Radford (6 p.m.) Saturday for senior night before traveling to High Point (7 p.m.) on Nov. 4 to conclude its league schedule.
