Coastal sweeps Warhawks; men capture fourth straight

Senior forward Zac Cuthbertson scored a game-high 29 points and freshman guard DeVante Jones added a career high 25 points as Coastal Carolina led from start to finish in beating Louisiana-Monroe 92-81 in a Sun Belt game Thursday at the HTC Center. It was the highest point total for the Chanticleers this season.

Junior guard Tyrell Gumbs-Frater also hit for 12 points, all in the first half, as the Chanticleers improved to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference with their fourth consecutive win. ULM, led by senior forward Travis Munnings’ 23 points, dropped to 11-9 and 4-4.

Coastal built a 20-point lead early in the second half at 61-41 before ULM rallied to trail by only 78-73 with two minutes remaining in the game, but the Chanticleers made 10-14 free throws down the stretch to hang on. Coastal was also aided by a double technical on the ULM bench at the 1:35 mark, leading to a 4-point play that put the Chanticleers safely in front 84-73.

Women

The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team outscored ULM by 23 points in the second half of Thursday night’s game, leading to a 79-54 victory for the Chants at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Coastal (10-9, 2-6) used a stretch of 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to break open a game that had previously been tied five times. ULM (7-12, 1-7) was held without a point for over six minutes of action as the Chants pulled in front for a double-digit lead.

The Chants led by 12 at the end of the third quarter, and shot over 50 percent from the field in the fourth as they continued to pull away for the 25-point final margin.

Coastal received balanced scoring in the winning effort as four Chants reached double figures.

Caitlin Roche led all players with 18 points on 7-17 from the field with four 3-pointers. DJ Williams scored 17 points, including 12 in the second half, to reach double digits for the 11th straight game. Aja Blount recorded 13 points. Breelyn Blanding had a perfect shooting night, going 4-4 from the field and sinking one attempt at the line for 11 points.
