Coastal takes spring game to beach to close out camp

ccufoot-2015springgameThe Coastal Carolina University football program concluded the spring practice season with the Black team defeating the White team by a 25-10 score in the annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon.

The game, which was played at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach due to the installation of Teal Turf at Brooks Stadium, was followed by a meet and greet session between the Chanticleers and fans in attendance.

Three-time national coach of the year finalist Joe Moglia opened the day addressing the crowd to explain the game’s format, which was a complete deviation from the past three years as the squads played a half of live action. The 2015 game featured teams in black and white jerseys that were drafted by Alex Ross (black team captain) and Richie Sampson along with Leroy Cummings (white team captains).

The Michael Church-led White offense was the first to take the field and produced a quick first down, but failed to move the chains again on the drive. Returning to his home stadium, Myrtle Beach High product Tyler Keane then led the Black offense onto the field for its first possession. Rising junior De’Angelo Henderson immediately displayed his burst and shiftiness to pick up 18 yards on first down. The drive stalled three plays later.

White took over possession on its own 41 and produced a first down, but Rayshaud Shield made a fourth down stop behind the line four plays later to force a turnover on downs.

With the ball on White’s 30-yard line, the Black offence took over and quick moved inside the five-yard line with another 15-plus yard run by Henderson. However, the Black squad was stood up at the goal line on consecutive plays then suffered a false start penalty and a failed third down play. Masamitsu Ishibashi salvaged the drive with a 25-yard field goal to give Black an early 3-0 lead.

The teams traded interceptions on their next drives as Kerron Johnson picked off Church and Kamron Summers picked off Josh Stilley.

On White’s next defensive series, Summers recovered a first-down fumble and rumbled 20 yards before being taken down at the 12. A rush for no gain and three incompletions set up Ryan Granger’s field goal from 29 yard out to knot the game at 3-3.

Black, quarterbacked by Stilley, responded with a score on the ensuing possession. Stilley moved the offense down the field with 37 yards through the air and Kenneth Daniels, who opened the drive with a 13-yard scamper, capped the drive with a two-yard plunge. Ishibashi split the uprights on the PAT to move Black back in front by a 10-3 score.

The Black team quickly made the score 16-3 after a dropped punt snap resulted in a recovery for a touchdown for Devin Brown.

Church led White to its only touchdown of the afternoon on the 12th overall series of the game. After a hold on first down, Church scrambled for nine yards then converted a 4th-and-7 to keep the drive alive. Four plays later Church found Gary Bradshaw for a 36-yard touchdown on a post pattern. Granger made the PAT, cutting Black’s lead to 16-10.

Black got three points back on the following possession as Ishibashi’s 24-yard field goal proved true. The series was highlighted by a 34-yard Keane to Chris Jones pass play near the sideline.

White then went 3-and-out on its final series before Stilley led Black down the field for a final touchdown. Daniels scored from one-yard out to end the game and bring the final score to 25-10.
