Coastal’s 4×400 relay team breaks tape at Penn Relays

The Coastal Carolina women’s 4×400 team shattered the school record and won the gold medal in the College Final of the Penn Relays on Saturday.

With the CCU men’s and women’s track & field teams in action at both the Penn Relays and the Highlander Invitational, the women’s 4×400 team stole the spotlight.

Freshman Jessica Gelibert, sophomore Qwontajah Thompson, freshman Teka Simpson and senior Erica Peake broke the CCU school record by 4.01 seconds with a first-place finishing time of 3:34.23, breaking the previous record held by Gelibert, Thompson, Peake and sophomore Camille Hurley set at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala.

The 4×400 team finished ahead of SEC members Mississippi State, South Carolina and Kentucky.

Freshman Jalacy Green led the way at the Highlander Invitational with a season-best distance of 12.29 meters in the women’s shot put while finishing sixth.

Junior Ronnie Jackson, sophomore Joseph Wilson, freshman Corey Hackett-Greene and sophomore Eric Brown teamed up for the 4×100 College Final at the Penn Relays and came away with a fifth-place finish with a time of 40.77. The Chants finished ahead of Kentucky.

Sophomore DeAndra Lipscomb, Hackett-Greene, freshman Matthew Lights and freshman Deion Wellington placed fifth in the 4×400 College Final with a time of 3:10.98 just ahead of North Carolina.

Freshman Jordan Roach and junior Cameron Griggs threw their way to a one, two finish in the men’s discus at the Highlander Invitational. Roach had a distance of 49.18 meters while Griggs best throw came in at 47.97 meters. Griggs also placed second in the men’s shot put with a toss of 15.67 meters.

Senior Naomi Atkins was the last CCU competitor at the Highlander Invitational as she placed fifth in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 45.70 meters.

The men’s and women’s track and field teams will be back in action next weekend May 3-4 at the Bob Pollock Invitational hosted by Clemson.
