Coastal’s Bowman named national hitter of the week

One day after being honored by the Big South Conference, senior Daniel Bowman was named the National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Bowman, listed by ESPN.com as one of the top 15 returning seniors for 2012, batted .538 (14-26) in six games last week, recorded multiple hits in all six contests and tallied an RBI in five of the six outings. He scored seven times, had six RBI and hit for the cycle over the week with a double, triple and home run. He also walked three times, stole two bases, put down a sacrifice bunt and hit a sacrifice fly to help the Chanticleers win four games.

Bowman was 3-4 with a double, home run and 2 RBI vs. Toledo on March 9, and was 3-5 vs. Marist on March 10. He accounted for three of Coastal’s four runs in the 4-1 win over Ohio State on Saturday. Bowman finished the week with a .581 on-base percentage, a .769 slugging percentage and was perfect on his 13 fielding chances.

Bowman has a nine-game hit streak going and has reached base safely (by hit/walk/hit by pitch) in 11 straight games. Bowman now has his career batting average over .300 (.301) due to his performance this past week. He is batting .392 for the season.

On the CCU career list, Bowman ranks:
– 14th in games played (199)
– 10th in games started (197)
– 5th in at bats (777)
– 9th in runs scored (162)
– 12th in hits (234)
– 15th in doubles (42)
– 8th in triples (8)
– 4th in home runs (41)
– 4th in RBI (174)
– 5th in total bases (415)

This is the first time Bowman has earned a national weekly award. Last year, he was named Southeast Region Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com after leading CCU to a sweep over Liberty, going 5-for-11 at the plate with all five hits being extra base hits.

Coastal Carolina continues its 22-game home stand this Wednesday, hosting the College of Charleston at 4 p.m.
