Coastal’s first NCAA singles entry learns first-round foe

ccutennis-tsangaridis2No. 114 Philippe Tsangaridis of the Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team learned his first-round opponent for the 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship on Tuesday morning when the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee announced the singles draws.

Tsangaridis, the first Chanticleer to represent Coastal individually at the NCAA Tennis Championship, will square off against No. 45 Jordi Vives of Florida Gulf Coast at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship begins on May 21, and the individual champion will be crowned on May 26 at the conclusion of the tournament. Weather permitting, all matches will be played outdoors at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. All matches for the singles championship will be best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches. The singles tournament consists of 64 players – 17 automatic qualifiers and 47 at-large selections.

The only Big South player to finish the season with a national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Tsangaridis earned a spot in the 64-competitor tournament after being awarded the conference’s automatic qualifier. The junior finished the regular season and Big South tournament with a 12-7 overall singles record, including a 4-3 mark against league opponents. Tsangaridis’ most notable win this season occurred on Feb. 15 when he defeated No. 13 Joran Vliegen of East Carolina in three sets.

Like Tsangaridis, Vives earned Florida Gulf Coast’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. A junior from Barcelona, Spain, Vives posted a season singles record of 20-2 that included wins against No. 60 Caio Gomes of North Florida, No. 72 Chris Helliar of UAB and No. 105 David Biosca of ETSU. Vives’ only two losses this season came against opponents that at the time were ranked 72nd and 112th. Vives’ current national singles ranking of 45 is a career high.
